Britain must "defeat" the temptation to isolate itself from the rest of the world, William Hague will say at the launch of a report written by the murdered Labour MP Jo Cox, which warns against the rise of "unthinking pacifism".

The former foreign secretary will say that it is in the "best long-term security interest" of the UK to intervene in cases where people are faced with genocide, conflict or mass atrocity. His comments come in a recorded video message that will be played on Thursday morning at the release of a new report that was started by Mrs Cox, whom he describes as "fearless" and "clear-sighted".

The former humanitarian aid worker worked on the paper with the Tory MP and former soldier Tom Tugendhat.

Their paper, 'The Cost of Doing Nothing', was due to be published last July to coincide with Sir John Chilcot's inquiry into the Iraq war.

However, Mrs Cox's murder outside her constituency office last June led to the report's publication being delayed.
