The fact remains, she knew she was pregnant, she came here for free treatment, otherwise why hasn't she paid up?
Making excuses for her? Not at all, just putting straight your misconception of the facts.
I never said she didn't know she was pregnant when she came here, I did question your claim that she was in labour during the flight and that she stepped off the plane and straight into theatre.
I questioned your claim she was a diplomats wife.
I also showed you that the hospital aren't chasing her for the money.
Undoubtedly she came here for treatment, whether she actually expected it to be free is a point for debate but she certainly hasn't been chased for the money as is stated by the hospital where she delivered.
One thing is clear though, if these women are coming here for maternity care it's an indictment of how good our maternity care is in this country.

Your last paragraph shows that you do not care that we are being "ripped off".

No, it shows that despite underfunding we still have one of the best and safest maternity systems in the world.

I agree with that SS, but you can surely see that SOME are taking advantage?

I'm not disputing that Nicko, but given the fact our maternity system is as I described, are you actually surprised that women in countries where maternity care is poor with maternal and neonatal deaths very high come here to give birth?
Yes, they should pay and yes the NHS should claim the money back if there is a way to do so effectively without it actually costing them more in the process but these women can't be blamed for wanting the best for their babies anymore than women in this country can.

Re: Foreign Pregnant Health Tourists
The system we use in trying to get back money paid out to people is flawed.
The case mentioned highlights this....only ONE request for hundreds of thousands of pounds to be repaid, which was ignored, and then seemingly forgotten....why?
What is being spent in this department (maternity) all comes out of the same NHS pot....someone else who badly needs NHS treatment will not get it because the money is not available.
If it was your or my child dying because vital equipment was not available, or your or my elderly parent dying in a hospital corridor because no bed or Dr was available to care for them.....maybe it would be seen in a different light.

We don't know it was ignored though. The letter was sent 6 months later and was returned unopened.
I think she might have actually returned to Nigeria by that point.

I heard a discussion on the radio a couple of weeks ago, and the general opinion was many NHS trusts simply don't try hard enough to get back monies owed.....this case sounds exactly like the ones they were talking about.
Whether she had returned to Nigeria or not the money was still outstanding.

Yes, and the hospital have said they won't be chasing her.
Liker I said, it could well be the costs of chasing for the money means it isn't worth it.

Well then something needs to change surely.
Anyone in business who took that attitude would soon be bankrupt.

Well they have introduced the health surcharge but that doesn't apply to visitor visa's.

Stop making excuses for these thieves, yes they are thieves taking from our people who are sick.
Taking something which is not your own with the intention of avoiding payment is PREMEDITATED CRIMINAL THEFT, malice aforethought.
Can you please define what you mean by 'our people' Major.

If hospitals are not chasing people for the money they owe, isn't that the fault of the hospitals? Mind you, they probably have enough to do what with trying to sort out other problems.
