They call this 'navel gazing.'  When the media writes articles about itself, it is contemplating its own navel.

We need a lot less 'what do they think of us', and a lot more of 'what do we think of ourselves'?  Soldiers who rape, torture and kill?  Cops who murder their own citizens?  A legislature bent on opposing democracy?  A political party that wages war on women, hates Africans, and departs Hispanics because the way they might vote?

A lot more to be gained elsewhere.
