Only England and Wales voted to leave the EU. So the UK should let them go
First topic message reminder :
The people have spoken and the UK stands divided. The English and the Welsh voted to leave the EU. Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain. Big questions arise: will Scotland want to leave the UK and/or be able to stay in the EU? What happens to the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and, for that matter, the entire Irish settlement? How can people be stripped of rights? What about trade? What about migration? At the time of the referendum on independence for Scotland from the UK in 2014, Scottish people faced a conundrum. If Scotland had left the UK, then Scotland would automatically have been ejected from the EU.
The Scottish nationalists said that their intention would be for Scotland to apply to become a member of the EU, but the indications from Brussels were that Scotland would have to join the queue for membership. Any Scottish application would have to be agreed by all EU states, including Spain, which is reluctant to see breakaway regions being treated kindly, given the threat of secession by Catalonia.
With article 50 looming large and the government keen to avoid lengthy parliamentary debate on the terms of departure, perhaps it’s worth considering another form of Brexit. Why don’t England and Wales leave the United Kingdom? They would be automatically ejected from the EU and Scotland and Northern Ireland would then be the constituent parts of the United Kingdom, which would remain in the EU.
Under this arrangement, the UK (by then, the UK of Scotland and Northern Ireland) would not trigger article 50 and would not leave the EU. This would mean that there would be no issue between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in terms of trade and the movement of people across the border. The voters there would get what they voted for. Scotland and Northern Ireland could adopt the euro, if they wished. The EU land border with England would be the border with Scotland.

Seems like a sensible solution to me.

Well I guess you chaps will always be beholden to someone, as is your way, although I don't see our Union Jack being replace by the communist star of China anytime soon.veya_victaous wrote:lol umm no we are not we are beholden to china

Unfortunately you Aussies have a very small part to play in the greater scheme of things, maybe it's simply best for you to accept that your motherland is best placed to dictate your fate!

Re: Only England and Wales voted to leave the EU. So the UK should let them go
Irn... Scotland had their own vote for themselves as to whether they wanted to continue being part of the uk or not... they voted overwhelmingly to continue being part of the uk!
The rest of the uk didn't get a vote on that... and there was never any arguments about different parts/regions of Scotland then saying that they voted out while others voted in and so they should have their own bespoke arrangements etc... Scotland voted as a whole and the result was the result for all of Scotland to abide by...
Now... the UK referendum on staying in or getting out of the EU was a uk wide vote for the whole of the uk as a collective group... the vote was for the whole of the uk to decide as a whole... and the result was for the whole of the uk to respect and abide by as a whole uk... not for some people in different parts/regions of the uk to then start whingeing on about how more people in their local area voted in so they should have it their way with some break away bespoke bullshit arrangement and bollocks to everyone else in the UK democratic vote process...!!!
The uk result was to leave the eu!!!
Why is it that so many remainers are so critical about privatisation of public sector services like the railways/nhs/prisons/benefits etc, but they vote for the eu when it is eu directives that are the whole reason why our public services being opened up to private corporations to take over the running of in the first place...!?
If you are against privatisation of public services and you voted to remain in the eu... then you are either a complete idiot with ignorance of epic proportions... or you are insane...!!!
Public Sector EU Procurement Legislation is the eu rules that force the opening up of public sector services to private corporations!!!
Including the railways and the nhs!!!

Re: Only England and Wales voted to leave the EU. So the UK should let them go
CHINA is the largest importer into Oz, and the second largest buyer of Aussie production (after Japan..).
Britain has slipped down to being Oz's #10 trading partner, from #3 forty years ago, as it has become more Euro-centric year-by-year..
Australia hasn't been "beholden" to the UK since the mid- 1970s..
Any debts Oz still has owing to Britain these days, the British banks and financiers will simply have to line up and wait their turn behind half-a-dozen more important lenders.
Oz's long term recurring national debt, expressed as a % of the GNP, is less than 40%.. Britain's is over 90%...
Furthermore, Australia is one of only six sovereign states that has sufficient natural resources, that it could easily clear the total government debts by better managing those resources -- instead of continually kowtowing to multinational interests..
