Do you, or do you believe there is a time and a place for letting rip with the old four letter expletives?
Do you swear more than you used to or have you always been foul mouthed?
Is there anything wrong in it.....and has swearing become much more socially acceptable nowadays, if so....why?

I swear a lot among friends and some family in private. I don't swear at all in front of parents or Grandparents.

In public it depends on the place. A pub or on the street then I'll swear, not loudly but then I'd never speak so loudly that others could easily overhear anyway. But pretty much anywhere else- a park, a museum a restaurant etc- no.

You can blame the New Zealand Air Force for my swearing.   I was the only girl working with them in Singapore and didn't realise how much I had picked up until my Dad said something.   Can't say as it bothers me.   Best put down I ever heard was from a very lovely girl in a bus queue who was being bothered by a fella who obviously thought he was the bees knees.   She looked him up and down and in a VERY refined voice said 'I suggest you fuck right off'.   He slunk away with his tail between his legs.

I have one particular friend where we both swear a lot....always in fun though.
I dont swear much in general conversation though and I never swore in front of my Mum, she didn't like it.
Choosing films I thought she would like was always a bit tricky. I remember one we watched together was 'Planes, trains and automobiles'....she was really enjoying it till Steve Martins character let forth a stream of F words at the sarky woman behind the desk.....she felt a bit let down after that. Laughing

Now it's impossible to watch a film, even a cert 12 that doesn't have swearing in it.

Lol....sometimes using a swear word makes all the difference. Laughing

Swearing doesn't really bother me now, when I was younger it wasn't the norm to pepper every sentence with the F word, now, for some it's used all the time, so it certainly holds no shock value.
I hate to hear it said in front of children though....I do believe there is a time and a place.

I swear whenever and wherever I feel like it. Sometimes it's often and other times, not so often.

They're just words. Who is it that told us they were bad? Who is this Lord of the Words?

He can fuck right off.

Post by JulesV Tue Dec 06, 2016 2:34 pm

I was just about to do this very same thread, for a discussion. It's an amazing coincidence when two people have the same idea together ...... though my own thread would have specifically addressed the attitude of gender intolerance (ie sex discrimination) of swearing, on forums. I'm really glad someone else has done this thread cos it's saved me the trouble.  fiesta

The two main points I'd have wanted to make are:
1. Why do some incredibly old fashioned people grumble that it's bad when women swear??  If you hate swearing then surely you should equally criticise BOTH men and women swearing. Strange to see people selectively criticise female swearing, yet tolerate men turning the air blue, or even find it funny.

2. Remember that on forums, all women use the F word. There are no exceptions that I know of.

Frankly I'm bored rigid with this specific gender intolerance, whereby some people are quite happy for men to swear, yet frown on women doing so. And they grumble about it AD NAUSEUM!!!  Stop grumbling about women using the F word.   It's 2016, not the 16th century.

My daughter phoned me up in a posh cafe, my phone was on autospeaker on account of my being 60% deaf.
Her words , to my horror were " I think I've broken my toe. It fucking hurts like fuck".
I drank my latte quickly!

Good points, but I don't often see women being singled out for bad language when men are not....I think either people disapprove of swearing or they don't...it's a bit sexist to comment on female only bad language.

I don't think I do use the F word on forums.....I cant ever remember doing so anyway....I prefer to say the P word, and then very sparingly when someone has really pissed me off. Cool

I have already sent you a quick PM with the date, time and even a screengrab, so that you can revisit the thread yourself, if you wish, to refresh your memory.

The first time I noticed repeated swearing on TV was in the soap Brookside. They said 'bastard' quite a lot....when my young son said it once I decided to not watch it again when he was around.

Shut up major. Clearly a joke being remembered between two posters, no need to stick your oar in.

No probs....I don't mind being reminded of things I have said 3 years ago....especially when it was funny, and in the context that was said it was. Laughing
I do remember lots of stuff from years gone by on forums, sometimes I have a look back at long forgotten threads and have a giggle to myself.
Tell you what though Jules.....some of the stuff we all came out with in those days (I have to say it was usually in retaliation) but it was bloody good stuff. Laughing
YES it was jolly good fun
We all had a laugh.

Exactly
I was just reminiscing about nostalgic old times with Syl, we all had great fun.
I'll go and  play some more Ari Up songs, loved them.
