Low income families ‘worst hit’ by cuts in council tax benefit as thousands struggle with household bills
Low-income families in deprived areas are bearing the brunt of the Government’s cuts in council tax benefit, according to research published today.
The findings undermine the Coalition’s pledge that its austerity programme is hitting the better off rather than the poor.
When council tax benefit was abolished last April, English local authorities were ordered to design their own schemes. They had to maintain the same help for pensioners but could ask low-income working age families to pay more council tax, or they could keep the previous level of support by absorbing a 10 per cent cut worth £414m in central government funding.
The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) found that the shake-up reduced entitlement for 2.5m working households by an average of £160 in the current financial year. Some 70 per cent of authorities asked for a minimum payment and only 20 per cent found the money to maintain the previous level of support.

Out of me and a scrounger who has never worked in his life I am "worst-hit".
And that's before, and after, the austerity measures.
Here's how I work it out:
I pay £1000 per month tax.
They get given £1000 per month.
That's a difference of £2,000 per month.
FACT!
And that's before, and after, the austerity measures.

But do you now agree that I am worst-hit?
If I were a multi-millionaire I would be hit even more - is that correct?

Andy, you are very lucky. Lucky that you have a well paid job and that you haven't lost it,,,,,,,yet. Other people have not been so lucky and have been consigned to the scrapheap. You are doing exactly as George Osborne would want you to by making your contribution, paying your taxes and generally getting stuck in. You should be proud of yourself. A multi-millionaire would feel no pain. They may sob into their champagne glasses but they have to remember that we are all in this together.
It's the welfare cuts that is the subject of this thread and as far as I can see you are not on benefits so in that respect you are unaffected.

If everybody paid their taxes as the government expects, and had done over the past 20 years we'd all be better off.
Unfortunately that isn't the case with multi-millionaires, the self employed and the scroungers.

That's a fair point and I can't disagree with that. In the main the bankers and the multi-miilionaires have robbed this nation of it's wealth. They've practically stolen the money from under our noses and made off with the swag without even wearing a mask.
Not one prosecution for what happened - not even one.

But if you are sat on your backside working, your eyes, ears, and hands are normally engaged in work and you don't have time for social networking.

A thousand a month he should be so lucky move up the scale a bit and you rapidly pay a fortune in tax. On £130,000 try £5000 per month!!! plus any bonuses will attract tax at 56%. In other words the govt take more of you than you get to keep.
I can find no reasonable argument to take more than half, it is a massive disincentive. According to the comrades though they know best how to spend our money that's all right then.

Well considering the UK is leaps and bounds recovering more than the rest in the EU that speaks volumes for the measures taken.
Short term they are harsh and hard but benefit everyone in the long term, where are Labour plans would have hurt far more people in the long term
