Why do so many prisoners doing life or on death row find god?

It couldn't possibly be that they want to pull the wool over the eyes of prison visitors and campaigners fighting against the death penalty could it?
What's your opinion?

I think, when facing death, some people will grab onto something that makes them feel hope as they leave the earth, something that makes them feel as though they're not alone.

They realise they have fucked themselves and want to believe they still have a chance at redemption and forgiveness in a future they don't have. Saddest part is many will tell them they can- murder a dozen people but accept god at the end and all is forgiven.

If there's a afterlife and follow on existence I wonder if they will become the victims of the same kind of killers themselves as that would kind of be justice but for mass murderers that would take multiple lives before justice was served.
Bringing back hanging is the only way forward in my opinion!
