Brexit: Japan warns firms may move European HQ out of Britain Empty Brexit: Japan warns firms may move European HQ out of Britain

Post by Irn Bru Mon Sep 05, 2016 10:14 pm

Japan's government has warned that Brexit could result in the country's firms moving their European head offices out of Britain.

The strongly worded report from Japan's foreign ministry says the firms might want to move "if EU laws cease to be applicable in the UK".

It calls on Theresa May's government to deal with the companies' concerns in a "responsible manner".

Downing Street received the report earlier this week, the BBC understands.

Japanese firms employ an estimated 140,000 workers in the UK, with Nomura bank, manufacturing giant Hitachi and carmakers Honda, Nissan and Toyota all having major bases in the country.

The letter warns: "Japanese businesses with their European headquarters in the UK may decide to transfer their head-office function to Continental Europe if EU laws cease to be applicable in the UK after its withdrawal."

And I would think that Japan isn't the only country considering its options.

Definitely doubt it's the only country thinking about it.   Quite honestly I'm amazed that people seem to think we are over the hump of the decision   What they don't seem to realise is that the problems haven't even begun yet.   This is a short honeymoon period while nothing changes and negotiations haven't started.   We already know that the promises were lies, the NHS isn't going to get more money, it's going to get less, foreign companies are still watching and waiting and will not take any steps until they know the results of negotiations and where we are going to stand trade wise.   Others are still kidding themselves we will have access to the single market without allowing access of labour.   They are living in cloud cuckoo land.  In a years time, when decisions are actually being made, the penny will start to drop.

That's worrying.
Hopefully they will decide not to do that, but I don't think anyone can predict yet how this is going to work out.
Many businesses are booming since brexit, the predicted calamity has not happened....but it's early days.

There are so many videos on the net claiming that the US financial market is about to crash big time, sometime at the end of this year. Nothing to do with BREXIT though so don't know why I mentioned that, just popped into my head Laughing

The EU is also a Customs Union meaning free movement of goods. And whatever trade deal may come up that will end and all goods entering the UK and our goods going into the EU will be stopped for Customs cleareance.

Can't see any way round that so long tailbacks on the roads whilst that happens.

We can trade with the eu without being in the eu or run by the eu...

There are plenty of other countries round the world who currently trade with the eu, who aren't in the eu and aren't run by the eu and don't have open borders to eu either...

That's true and all their goods are stopped at the border and have to undergo Customs clearance before being admiited into this country. Was fine when we had Customs staff in the numbers needed to do that then but we don't have them now.

Why would I buy what could be homegrown food from abroad when I can purchase from a farm in Britain? I get all my veg from a farm. Supermarket spuds are often 12 months old before you buy them.

On the other hand, I would sure hate to see French-German-Italian wine replaced by **cough-cough** English wine.  Rolling Eyes

Y'all are just a couple of islands, no longer a huge commonwealth.  It didn't matter when Australia gave you wine from Adelaide, and you got wheat and minerals from Canada and pharmaceuticals and clothing from India, etc.  Now those are independent countries, and trade with Britain at arms length.

What's is happening with Brexit?  Is Parliament simply ignoring the vote, as I suspect they should.  It was not done under the auspices of any governmental procedure or law within the UK.  It was a referendum under European Union Referendum Act 2015, EU law.  So, logically we should wait until the EU acts, right?

BBC wrote:Brexit: Ignoring Leave vote would be outrage MPs told

Ex-Tory minister John Penrose said any attempt to bypass the Leave vote would be "corrosive" to public trust.

But Labour MP David Lammy said the public had been "lied to" and a further vote on the Brexit deal was the only way out of the "constitutional crisis".

A public petition urging a new EU vote has attracted four million signatures.
The debate came as Brexit Secretary David Davis told MPs leaving the EU would offer "new freedoms and horizons" but the government would take time to get it right.

"...Perhaps the worst case is fishing. The UK should be self sufficient in fish. The EU’s common fishery policy has instead allowed many industrial trawlers to come into our fishing grounds from elsewhere, taking large catches. In response to the damage they do to the fish stocks, the EU then imposes severe quotas on UK fishing vessels. Contrast the port of Lowestoft today with the bustling fishing port of 1970 before we joined the EEC. Most of the fishing vessels have gone. The UK ends up having to import far too much fish because our own fishing grounds have been both damaged and controlled..."

Actually there was a programme called "living on benefits" or something that was based in a fishing village that had lost it's fishing trade due to government something or other.....practically everyone was unemployed and an alcoholic. There were no jobs as the village totally relied on the fishing industry.

Hope someone remembers it. Chanel four I think.

The guardian link is hardly right wing... and the main part of the story is told by...

'...Tony Rutherford, chief executive of North Devon Fishermen’s Association... and fourth generation in his family in the fishing business... who has owned Bideford Fisheries, a business on the quay that buys from fishermen and sells on to wholesalers, since 1979... and works in a building that was built using £3.8m of (UK TAXPAYERS MONEY GIVEN TO THE EU BUT THEN WITH SOME OF IT SPENT BACK HERE IN UK REBRANDED AS) EU grants..."

I'd say this man is more than an expert on these matters...

EU rules, if we catch more fish than we are allowed the surplus has to be thrown back. If you are "Trawling",you can't help catching x amounts of fish. It makes me cry to see tons of good fish tipped back dead into the sea I can't see any way around it, can any one apart from stopping fishing entirely? As an aside, French and Spanish Trawlers fish our waters with impunity.

I don't need awards to tell me about wine.  The Napa/Sonoma/Mendocino wine region is right in my back yard.  I grew up tasting and evaluating wine.  Today, I don't drink, but I wouldn't even cook with any wine that isn't Californian or French.

Oh...Adelaide wines are good, some excellent, and Chilean wines too.  Italian wines are for pasta, but a good German liebfraumilch can be a fine accompaniment for cheese, apples, pears, and other crisp fruit.  I would consider English wine to be a contradiction in terms.

The only beer worth the money are Flanders beers or Mexican beers, of course because they were taught to brew beers by the Dutch.

There are only two essential American whiskeys: corn and grain.  Corn whiskey can only be made by Americans, because the secret has never reached Europe.  The best recipes are still in the back woods of the Smoky Mountains, in Eastern Tennessee and West Carolina.  Bourbon is a grain whiskey...I can take it or leave it.  My whiskey comes from the Isle of Mull, and is an island whiskey, with the distinct stalty peat flavor.  It's called Tobermory 10-year old.

Quill I like a Chilean wine actually. I'm no expert but reading though your list I tend to agree with it all re wine - I prefer an Italian wine for red sauces.
As I've got older though, my tolerance for wine has decreased.

Irish Whisky is very nice too.

Point is, though, there's a LOT more to American beer than Coors, Miller and Budweiser. It's just made by smaller companies, rather than global conglomerates, so they have a harder time exporting and marketing.

Wetherspoons is a uk pub chain who do a real ale festival 2-3 times a year where they have a month with various different top quality ales from the UK mainly but others from Europe and a few from relatively small/unknown but serious usa brewers... and I must say... having tried some of them... they are remarkably good...!

If you read the article you will see how many awards they won...

And it was an Englishman who invented champagne...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/3086034/Champagne-invented-in-the-West-Country-claim-cider-makers.html

At Whipper Snapper Distillery in East Perth, Western Australia, owners Jimmy McKeown, Tom Cooper and Alasdair Malloch are in the process of creating their first whiskey. The spirit is made in the traditional American style but cannot be called bourbon as it is not made in the USA.

While their “Australian Corn Whiskey” is currently ageing in American oak barrels, they have released the Crazy Uncle Moonshine, made from corn, wheat and malted barley. With its distinctive straight jacket label wrapped around the bottle, Moonshine is bottled at 40% ABV and has a clean, fresh taste and a creamy texture

From the Great Southern Distilling Company in Albany, Western Australia comes Tiger Snake Sour Mash Whiskey (43% ABV), Australia’s first legal Sour Mash Whiskey. The spirit was awarded a bronze medal at the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania a year before it was bottled.

I like a sweet mild beer, like the Chinese beer Tsingtao. It's yummy ice cold.

Great. I look forward to tasting it. But if it's corn whiskey, don't be lookin' to calling it Bourbon. That's sour mash.

Cool

YOU can probably find any alcoholic beverages being brewed somewhere down here, if one looks hard enough..

Brandy, cider, perry, meads, beers, wines, port, sherry, gin, vodka, alcoholic ginger beer, alcoholic lemonade, sour mash, whiskies, fancy liquers..
IF it can be brewed, than someone's surely doing it somewhere.         Brexit: Japan warns firms may move European HQ out of Britain 2097912929

P.S. And nearly forgot good ol' Rum...
(Only two kinds really worth considering :  Bundaberg,  or  Jamaican  ???)

Rum makes me vomit. Even the smell of it. It s drink favoured by a lot of black people here, the older generation. An ex-boyfriends dad used to drink it and he'd sometimes get a bit over-friendly and try and plant a kiss on me - he stank of rum.

I take all my drinks ice cold apart from water, I like it room temperature.
When I used to sing I could never have cold drinks, they shrink your vocal chords somehow. Warm green tea with honey...drank that for years before going on stage.
Hate it now.

Only one spirit made me throw up. One afternoon in Tucson I started in early with Tequila at the Samaniego House. I don't know how I got home, but I couldn't drink Tequila for a year or two afterward. Mad

Yeah I hate that room-spinning feeling. It's horrid. Tequila is one of those drinks that suddenly hit you and.....wham! You're good and drunk.
