First topic message reminder :

TV cook and author tells Desert Island Discs she has come to expect being ‘shoved, pushed or verbally abused’

Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain says racist abuse is part of her everyday life - Page 3 2419

Nadiya Hussain, the winner of last year’s Great British Bake Off, says that racist abuse has become an everyday part of her life.

Speaking on Sunday’s Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4, Hussain said she is astounded at being credited for her positive effect on race relations with the Muslim community as she described the anti-Islamic abuse she still suffers.

“It sounds really silly [but] it feels like that’s become a part of my life now– I expect it,” she said. “I expect to be shoved or pushed or verbally abused, because it happens, it’s happened for years.”

The 31-year-old said the abuse has made her even more determined to be a role model to her three children and the wider Muslim community.

Hussain said: “I love being British and I love living here, this is my home and it always will be regardless of all the other things that define me. This is my home and I want my kids to be proud of that and I don’t want them to grow up with a chip on their shoulder, so I live as positively as I can.”

During her 10 years as a stay-at-home mother, Hussain said she “got so bogged down in being the best housewife” that she began losing herself, trapped in a bubble where she only spoke to close family and feared strangers’ judgment.

“I couldn’t get on a bus with them [her two eldest children] because I was so afraid of people looking at me, or people thinking I looked horrible, or people judging me and how could she possibly have two children in that space of time?” she said.

Hussain also spoke about her own childhood, from happy times living in Bangladesh to the family’s reliance on her grandmother while her parents cared for her two seriously ill siblings in hospital.

She said she bought her parents’ first house for them at the age of 19, adding: “I’ve spent my whole life watching my parents sacrifice things for me, so buying a house was nothing.”

Among the tracks she chose on the show was Counting Crows’ Accidentally in Love, which is the song that her now husband Abdul played in the background when they began courting each other before tying the knot in an arranged marriage aged 19.

She said her husband still serenades her with the song every day.

Since her victory in the final of Bake Off, which was the most-watched TV show in 2015 with 15 million viewers, Hussain’s career has skyrocketed. Her first cookbook, Nadiya’s Kitchen, was released in June, she writes a cooking column for the Times, and made the Queen’s 90th birthday cake.

She will also present an upcoming two-part BBC series called The Chronicles of Nadiya, which is described as “an exuberant food-inspired journey from Nadiya’s birthplace in Luton to her family village in the north-east of Bangladesh”, as well as judging the new Junior Bake Off.

Last week, Hussain told the Times she began wearing a hijab at the age of 14 to cover up her “bad hair more than anything else” because her father “cut it really badly”. Her parents, she said, were not particularly religious and neither her mother nor three sisters wore a hijab when she was growing up.

Exactly Nems, this happens all the time, but I don't think its down to racism
Its part and pacel of everyday life

I see no actual incidences of racism, just paranoia

Again the thing that gets me is that she was basically sold off by her parents in order that they could have a house
I find that disgusting
You and me both

Sorry, but how is it racist to be disgustd that a girl has been treated like cattle and forced into marriage against her will?

It's not racist to question why someone was pushed and shoved. Everyone gets pushed and shoved on the Underground, for example.

Hmmm, well for just a simplified example:
A.) your archaic machoagestic negative thoughts about this young wife/mother/woman seem heavily steeped in serious wild arsed generalizations that you've assumed and yet you couldn't be troubled to read the TRUTH; just make crap up and push that around as facts   FACT: both of their fathers arranged their wedding nuptials for them she was 19 - hardly the stereotypical 'child bride' you seem longing to create for her life story Rolling Eyes

B.) Rather Odd {yet telling} how you fabricated the "forced into marriage against her will" when she's never stated that Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain says racist abuse is part of her everyday life - Page 3 3350646086 but your cognitive thoughts and comprehension about an 'Arranged Marriage' and what is a forced marriage might need some DEEP READING!  You seem to have 'Selective' religion memory about such marital matters as this is a BIG DEAL in many of the Jewish Sects and it's still practiced in this the 21st century!

Nadiya Hussain has discussed her experience of an arranged marriage at age 19, saying she initially found the adjustment “harder than she thought” it would be.
Speaking on Loose Women, the popular baker told her fellow panelists how she and her husband Abdal were introduced by their fathers
After speaking on the phone for six months, they only met once before their wedding day and that was the day they got engaged.

Although having been happily married for 11 years, the Great British Bake Off champion said leaving her hometown of Luton to move up to Leeds to live with Abdal was harder than she anticipated.
“I got to 20 [years old] and I realized this is a lot harder than I thought. You really have to live with someone to really know what they’re like.”
Hussain said it took her a year after their marriage to “really know what he’s like”, but joked “11 years later I’m still working him out”.
She also said her husband’s good looks helped, “It’s great to be good looking and to like each other and have that attraction but I think the hard bit is actually after you get married.”

The 31-year-old, who has three children with Abdal said it is “unlikely” she will arrange her children’s marriages when they are older.
“I’d like my kids to go out there and it’s very different to what my life was like 11 years ago and things are going to change for them. And I do not need the hassle of finding them a husband or a wife, so I’ll happily let them go and find their own partners.”
Since storming to victory in a final watched by 13 million people, Hussain has signed a book deal and written columns and recipes for magazines as well as appearing in numerous television programmes.
Abdal, a technical manager, describes his “claim to fame” on Twitter as being the “husband of GBBO 2015 Winner Nadiya”.

Nadiya had an arranged marriage to husband Abdal when she was 19, but got her happy ending as the couple have gone on to enjoy a successful marriage.

Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain says the day she got married was “one of the worst days of her life”.

Nadiya, who had an arranged marriage to husband Abdal when she was 19, said: “I have to say my wedding day was one of the worst days of my life. One of the unspoken rules is as a bride you have to behave submissively and look downcast.

"I was an emotional wreck and I cried through the whole thing. I didn’t smile very much. You are literally on show and it’s something I was always really uncomfortable with. The bride will often keep her head down. I never really understood it.

She says she is very happily married now and is in love with her husband. I watched the show and when she won at the end, she seemed very happy to see him.
In fact, I could see how deeply they each felt.

Not saying that I totally agree with arranged marriages but lots of non-arranged marriages and relationships fall apart all the time.

Great and how many women forced marriage are not happy?
Just because she is one of the lucky ones does not make arranged marriages right
They are an abomination as marriage should be about love, not to barter the girl as if she was cattle, or in this case for a house.
So I am glad she is happy, that does not correct the wrong done to countless girls world over and you only have to read countless stories where they are married off to men 3 times their age and are near enough sex slaves.
So whoop de doo that she is happy,. the practive is disgusting
To state that when many women suffer is not racist but rightly fully speaking out in the defende of countless innocent women who suffer.

Who knows what her life might have been like if she had been allowed to chance to fall in love for herself

Probably, or she might not have got married at all. She might have met guys who just wanted one thing.

A FORCED marriage is different from an ARRANGED marriage. The former is illegal, the latter is legal. She might have histrionically said she felt forced into it, but in legal terms it wasn't a forced marriage.

Really, if a girl is arranged to marry and she does not want and then is married, whazt do you call that if not forced?
It was no doubt very illegal
But not at the time she did get married
Again she clearly did not want to get married and thus is being forced into something she did not want and many have little choice as I am sure you have heard where they get ostracized or even killed

Really? A girl often cries in sorrow and calls it the worst day of their life on their wedding day, when they are chosing to marry

I've had a rethink and maybe my comments about Nadiyah were a bit harsh. She's behaved no differently from other winners of reality or cookery shows.

1. All previous winners of the great british bake off have been interviewed in glossy magazines and tv chat shows, just as much as she was, but because they did not mention anything that is much different from other English people, their replies did not hit anyone's radar. Nadiyah speaks from a perspective that isn't mainstream so whatever she says hits our consciousness more.

2. All winners have used it as a springboard to go on to greater things. Even the runner ups profit greatly from the increased profile, they become minor celebs and get recognised everywhere and they use this popularity to launch new careers in cuisine.
Nearly all have written books, some have published several.

These are some of the careers launched on the back of the winning the show -
Some became full time upmarket chefs on lorraine's tv show, cruise ships and large country houses.
-One guy makes colourful cakes and delivers them to your door.
-Touring the whole country giving lectures and demo's
-Setting up their own money spinning cookery blog sites.
-Running cookery lessons from home
-Food photography.

Like i said, the article was fine apart from the daft aspect on racism, which to me ruined it, as I see no evidence of actual racism
Like I said she seems a lovely woman and very happy, but why thrown in the racist card, it made me lose respect for her, when it was not needed

Because there is a lot of hypocrisy around?!

It could be that when she was talking about suffering racism every day and being pushed and shoved etc, and how she became stuck indoors as a housewife and obsessed with trying to be the best housewife etc, and only had contact with a small number of close family etc... Maybe she is trying to say that she had it tough when she had to live with her husband and he treated her badly, as she then had to do as she was told and to please him etc, stuck indoors and cut off from friends, maybe he pushed and shoved her and ran her down so much that it created some of the other paranoid issues she talked about...?

And maybe she meant that this was the racism as it was only happening to her because of HER race/religion while other (non Muslim/bengal) British women didn't have to put up with it...?

Anyone see what I'm saying?

He's not, she has said her husband is nothing but supportive and, as I posted to you from another article, she said she has had verbal racial abuse in the street and things thrown at her.

Like I said, I watched the show and when she won (well- deserved IMO) I saw nothing but great fondness between them and he was really proud of her. That shone through the most.

People don't go around throwing things in the street - they just don't. She sounds like a drama queen.

What does her baking have to do with her husband anyway? These daft programmes are just attention seeking.

I think she is getting caught up in her own story, that story is vague and lacks detail

I can't comment on the programme, I don't watch that sort of programme but she certainly isn't shy.

I do agree the story was sketchy but tbh, I find alot of journalism in these Newpapers, to be really disjointed and vague.

BELIEF ...now that's as subjective a topic as I've ever heard one!

Would Didgey-dooer have an concrete/firm/factual data about the reasons that Nadiya's feelings about her wedding day was anything but what she stated it was --- Hmmm, could be her words and her choice of words were just as simplistic as she'd stated!

I've known many a young bride that foolishly placed so many romantic hopes/dreams and 'BRIDE MAGAZINE' images into their own heads about that day of enchantment that they felt disheartened and very let down that the ceremony/event and party didn't hold up to the Sparkle-Rainbow-Bright Illusion that they'd created since they were 11 years old.  Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain says racist abuse is part of her everyday life - Page 3 2190311264
But to take her words and run with it as Didgey's done - build up this entire hysteria/hyped BS about her being drug to the alter and FORCED INTO HER MARRIAGE VOWS is just pure make belief and fairy dust!  But his slanted POV about anything and everything to do with 'Muslims' is so tainted as to be skewed by the very thought!  And then he has his followers that enjoy the club sensation that that provides instead of actually THINKING about this women as a proud individual - quite able to work and prove her worth and be as 'POSITIVE AS SHE'S STATED NUMEROUS TIMES' in all of those articles! Razz

Naaaaa, don't take Nadiya at her WORDS, believe In the word of the Didgey-dooer; Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain says racist abuse is part of her everyday life - Page 3 2787774761   because he KNOWS ALL!   Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain says racist abuse is part of her everyday life - Page 3 919144451
Seriously, Didgey-dooer ...I think you have a great comedic side that you just can't hide!

Which was what exactly...?

You automatically assume it must have been white British people being out of order... but it could well have been from some of the local Muslim/Bangladeshis having a go at her for being out unaccompanied, or for not having a veil on to stop other men seeing her pretty face and making them think sexual thoughts, or maybe her husband didnt like her going anywhere and had told others that she was up to no good so others would give her a hard time when she was out so she would stay indoors more to avoid the trouble...?

There are loads of different things a controlling partner will do to the other...

Chipping away bit by bit from all angles usually...

Totally undermining the persons confidence and cutting them off from friends and the outside world...

Re-read her words with this in mind and it definitely fits!

Thank you Raggs!

Do you think I'm reading too much into things...?

Or do you think I might be on to something...?

It's just that the bits and pieces of story aren't adding up right to me... and I get the feeling there is a bit more being said than there appears to be... cryptic if you like...
