(3 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, kitchen with walk-in pantry, combined living-dining; with verandahs front and rear, separate lockup garage - average size for the Lower Hunter region..).

Down in Sydney, you couldn't find a block of land for that price..
Move to the outer fringes of the Greater Sydney area, you might find a building block for $US 250-->>300,000  !

I'm not sure the point in the article, other then to make it look like Los Angeles was the worst you'd find for the money you'd spend ...and nothing could be further from the truth! 
Yes, there are really old sections of LA - just as there are in any huge major municipality but there are also those suburbs that many family's live and enjoy their nice neighborhood community-fresh air-sidewalks-commute to and from their jobs for the same price range as the article.  One just has to put in the time to LOOK!

I tried to find something to show what 300K get you in sydney but the closest thing was a car space for 140K.

even 2 bedroom very basic apartment in blacktown (outer sydney) is 400K. in Sydney proper a small studio apartment costs about 400K.

don't matter how hard you look, you'd not find something that big even in outer sydney for 300K, LA is good value.


But Out side of Sydney 300K gets you reasonable house and land

IT'S MAINLY down to average incomes, the cost of living, the availabilty of land, and the strength of the local economy...

Close to larger cities and business centres, it's always more expensive and 'ordinary'/average punters have no hope of buying into the property market..

AS you move out through the suburbs you gradually buy more for less -- until eventually you find twice as nice and big a house as that one in LA..

IF ANYONE wants to buy a half-decent home reasonably close to major centres like LA, Seattle, Washington, New York, London, Zurich, Munich, Milan, Moscow, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne -- I'm willing to bet you would need upwards of US$ 1 million  ???

In my area, 300K may buy you a one or two bed apartment/flat in a block.  Th average house price is about 500,000

There are some fabulous houses for the money there....Santorini being the one I want.

The Santorini one  wasn't the nicest house....it's the island I want to be on....so I would settle for the house even though it does look a bit like someone has ben using it for target practice.

I did not like th house on Santorini, but would still live in that house just for the fact the island is lovely.

Shame it would only get you a studio flat in Italy, as having that beauty outside your window would make anyone start the day smilling, but it is a popular area and very much money land.

Best house to me on itself to look at, would have to be Brittany, France, as to me its got cultural history, style and grace and a sheer beauty about it.

Yeah, on second glance that one is nice, because of the lighting and the pool - but the Russian house has character galore.

ON STYLE alone, I like the log cabin in Finland and that big open split level on ".. 4 floors" house in Sochi..

(Both could easily be adapted to an acreage around here !
Those countries would be too cold for me..).

I love the Greek islands, been to a few but Santorini is next on my list.

I will have to think of which houses would suit certain posters....this one isn't coming naturally to me.

I want to put all the posters I like in lovely cottages with roses growing by the door, or sea facing villas with blue shutters and bougainvillia smothering the white painted walls.

AND further north, up around Byron and Noosa.

BUT, places like that could probably also be found over on the west coast of the USA, or even in Hawaii..

THAT second last photo' there places that house around the Brisbane Waters/Kuringai Chase area on the northern fringes of Sydney, just before the Central Coast region starts...

Just over an hours drive south of here, 3 or 4 miles in from the actual beaches -- and a few hundred miles from the actual "outback"..     (My sister-in-law's father lives near there !).

The train from Newcastle through the Central Coast and down to Sydney runs along the shoreline of Brisbane Waters (in the background of that photo..), so that area will be familiar to anyone who travels along there...

IF driving, you actually need to detour off the Freeway/Expressway, to get a proper look at that area..

so the parks near my farm house include Bungonia and Morton
which give kuringai a run for her money and have far less tourist since they are further from sydeny
