Here's A Record Broken: Matt Smith - Sheared 731 ewes in 9 hours!
My old 80+ Aussie buddy, has been busy on his FB page and now I'm getting all sorts of interesting news and tid bits; since he was a herder/shearer in his day ...he loves showing me what these young men can do! Yes, he's got a whole lot of Aussie Pride.
TAFE SA Shearing
Congratulations to Matt Smith who yesterday broke a long standing record to shear 731 crossbreed ewes in 9hrs!
That's one every 44 seconds including dragging changing gear etc amazing stuff. After many months of fitness training and strict diets, you can still see the toll on his body after dragging 43.8 tons for the day!
Can you imagine the mental strength Matt must have?
If he doubted himself at any stage even for a few sheep he would've never achieved this feat!
So set yourself a realistic goal, long or short term.
Even if it's to pick up 10 seconds per sheep that's a lot over a week, once accomplished go again.
So get fit, eat well and believe in yourself, amazing things can be achieved when you put your mind to it!
Huge amount of respect to you Matt.

And he gave me a link for a whole bunch of 'clean sheep jokes' too:

NOTE THAT Matt Smith is New Zealand born (a lot of the leading shearers are..), and this record was broken over in Britain (!).
Australia is the world's #1 sheep and wool producer;
New Zealand #2 (and, they liked to brag that they had the most sheep per person..);
South Africa was third, and Russia was in fourth place a few years ago, but Russia may have passed SA by now..
DOWN HERE, farmhands on grazing properties are called 'Jackeroos/Jilleroos', while those who move the sheep and cattle are referred to as 'Drovers'. As opposed to shepherds and cowboys in Northern Hemisphere countries..

I believe China's actually No. 1. In Texas we (of course) do this:

Well, it's always 'IFFY' pulling articles with zero viable links off of the FB page - even when it from a trusted ole' buddies page/message. But I knew you or Veya would straighten it up with all of your knowledge for the area.
But that made my lower back - upper arms and neck ache just to think about the labor. My buddy showed me his old black & white photo's of his shearing days and then returned to one of his grandson's shear shacks - WOW, quite the difference and the tools that they have access to now from when they clipped with manual clippers. Very amazing.

CHINA'S often been one of those countries that kept their livestock figures to themselves (leaving other countries to make "educated guesses" over their actual livestock production figures..); and you never seem to see them figuring in those international production figures.
The 'International Wool Secretariat' was formed a few decades ago, with Oz, NZ and South Africa as the founding members, when they were the three major exporters.
While Russia (still the 'Soviet Union' at the time..), China, and the USA were also large enough producers, they were also net importers of wool and fibres. Italy is also a major buyer of wool.
ANOTHER factor with wool production in countries like Russia, China and Scotland, is that most of their production is in "coarse wool" (larger fibres), and they tend to produce less wool/animal compared to Australia and New Zealand..
The most expensive bales of ultra-fine sheep wool were coming out of a handful of farms in New Zealand and Australia only a few years ago, and were usually being sold to top-end mills for the Italian and Hong Kong markets..

This is the link to the story I checked to see where he was from, as I knew that there had been both Aussie and Kiwi world record holders in recent years --
