led a meeting in which I believe I managed to get a group of five grizzled sportswriters to embrace the new order of the news media -- digital first, nobody cares who we are, let's just make our content as awesome as can be and hopefully win readers over.

Ah, that makes me yearn for the good old days when a young reporter on his bicycle and with a great scoop in his notebook - something like an interview with the man who had just won the darts cup at Ye Olde Frogge & Nightgown pub - would ride around frantically searching for a one of those old red phone boxes, only to find that (a) some bastard had nicked the handset, (b) that it was being used as a public lavatory, (c) some dickhead had parked his van so close to it that you couldn't open the door or (d) it contained three giggling teenage girls with beehive hairdo's and micro skirts taking turns to chat to their boyfriends.

You know, Islam has come up exactly once in the thousands of articles I've written. A coach was praising his basketball player's work ethic, and added as a side note that it was even more impressive since he was fasting for Ramadan at the time.

Retired sportsmen who take up journalism.
And Professional journalists who decide to specialise in sports writing.
They come from opposite ends and sort of meet in the middle. They complement each other well.
