Sydney melting tonight
SYDNEYSIDERS are getting used to the feeling of a sweaty, sleepless night. They’ve got another one coming up. The news is not much better in Victoria.
As the record-breaking weather month in NSW nears an end, temperatures are soaring once again.
It’s set to be 31C at midnight in Sydney tonight, which will be a record for a January night.
Just weeks after Sydney residents sweltered through the Harbour City’s hottest January night in recorded history, forecasters say tonight will be more miserable.
Andrew Haigh from the Bureau of Meteorology said residents in the city can expect a low of just 26C. For those in the west it won’t drop before 27C before spiking again on Tuesday.
On January 13, when Sydney’s heatwave peaked, new overnight records were set at Observatory Hill (26.4C), Bankstown (26.2C), Camden (27.1C) and Richmond (28.2C).
The hot night will follow a 40C day in parts of NSW where students are returning to (hopefully) air-conditioned classrooms.
In Sydney’s west the mercury is expected to reach 42C. In Campbelltown and Liverpool it’ll get to at least 40C.
In the heart of the city, it’ll be slightly cooler — 32C — but it won’t feel like it. Humidity is expected to reach 74 per cent.
A total fire ban is in place in 11 NSW regions including Illawarra, the far south coast, the southern ranges, the northern slopes and New England.
On Tuesday, temperatures are expected to again soar towards the 40C mark. It’ll be 39C in the west and a maximum of 36C in the city before a cooler change and possible showers on Wednesday.
Sydney has experienced 14 days over 30C this month.
Victorians will be feeling the heat on Monday too, particularly in the state’s northwest where temperatures could reach 41C in Swan Hill and Mildura.

Re: Sydney melting tonight
Another balmy day in downtown NSW...
Must have been 41 or 42°C here yesterday aervo'..
Got close to that again today, but then a Southerly change around 4p.m. knocked 6° or 7° off.

Re: Sydney melting tonight
Yep... I have here..
Had it on for a few hours, last night..
Didn't need it today, after the temp' dropped down to the low 30's; just using a ceiling fan with a couple of windows and a door open, makes things a lot more bearable..
You can find that those people who start using their air-con' too soon, and/or for too long, will actually lower their acclimatising ability and weaken themselves to the point where they find it harder to handle the heat; and are often more sick and unhealthy at the same time.
(As well as wasting electricity at the same time..).
Much more important is keeping up one's fluid intake yhroughout the day, staying out of the sun (especially between 10 am and 4 pm) during extremes, and not over-exerting yourself during the heat..,

Re: Sydney melting tonight
I was going to say that about the air con, if used too soon or for too low a temperature, it will be too difficult for a person to acclimatise.
40 degrees though!! Sheesh. That is hot!!

I am sure many of us would agree and be happy if you sent the heat and the sunshine over here please.
Many thanks

When the tides and moon are right, and the fish are "running"...
Though the more popular times around here are early morning and late arvo'/early evening..
Just in this street alone, six of my neighbours have boats (plus another half dozen canoes and kayaks..), and one of those is big enough for some 'open water' fishing, as long as they don't go too far out.
And around the Lake and creeks, there are sufficient bridges, jetties/piers, and stream 'banks' to keep fishermen separated from sharks, stingrays and feral shopping trollies..

Up to 44°C as you move inland...
And getting warmer over the next two days -- predicting up to 47°C for Wallsend (north of here..) and Singleton on Sunday..
With hopefully a southerly change late Sunday.

Re: Sydney melting tonight
41°C in Canberra
and due to the threat of power outages they raised the Office temp to 26°C (I think it's normally 23°C)
Still better than outside

It's been like spring in Texas -- 70s and 80s for the highs. Very odd for February, this is usually the most bitterly cold month of winter here. I fully expect that I'll bake to death in my apartment sometime in April or May.

WITH the ambient (i.e. "in the shade..") temp's hovering in the mid-40s°C here at the moment, I will plead "temporary insanity" if any of my posts prove to be any more unintelligible or incoherent than is normally the case...
Aaarrgghh... My brain is melting !

Re: Sydney melting tonight
We've been in the 50's-60's F here in California. But we've been hit with storm after storm off the Pacific shore, and these are the storms that are building and hitting Texas to Illinois, and cruising over and hitting Washington, Philadelphia, New York and Boston.
Today is the last of them, tho.

I didn't say that ...

Incomprehensibility, and the weird and whacky, in these postings may reign supreme when the temp's get up into the mid/high 40s, and the low 20s/30s or more -- and that's °Celsius folks, and those 'fahrenheit' dinosaurs can do their own conversions...

No problem...the conversation is automatic if you are used to it. http://www.rapidtables.com/convert/temperature/how-celsius-to-fahrenheit.htm
