A coalition promise to name and shame firms paying below the minimum wage is proving empty as not one has since been identified.

Employment relations minister Jo Swinson vowed last October to crackdown on rogue firms breaking the law by hiring staff on the cheap .

She warned bosses they would face fines and “reputational damage” if they pay below the minimum wage of £6.31 an hour for adults over 21.

Mrs Swinson said: “It is illegal. I’m making it is easier to name and shame employers who break the law.”

But when we asked the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills if any bosses had been named and shamed, a spokesman replied: “Not yet.”

A report by employment expert Andy Hull revealed 300,000 staff are illegally paid.

He said: “The Coalition made a lot of noise in October about how it was naming and shaming exploitative employers.

"It hasn’t named one. It’s another example of the lip-service it has paid to minimum wage enforcement.”

Bosses face fines of £50,000 for paying below the minimum wage. But only nine have been prosecuted since it was introduced in 1998.

Hotel, catering, care home and cleaning staff are the most vulnerable to exploitation by employers – as well as overseas workers with poor English

That's another failure to add to the list.
