Police blame worst rise in recorded hate crime on EU referendum
Reported incidents increased by 42% in the week before and week after the UK’s vote to leave the EU on 23 June
Assistant chief constable Mark Hamilton said some people took the UK’s vote to leave the EU as licence to behave in a racist way
Police believe the spike in hate crime following the EU referendum was the worst on record.
Mark Hamilton, head of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), said: “I believe the referendum debate has led to an increase in reporting of hate crime. It is very clear in the last couple of weeks that more people have been aware of experiencing such incidents than we have had before.”
Reports to police increased by 42%, to more than 3,000 allegations of hate crime across Britain in the week before and the week after the 23 June vote. “It’s probably the worst spike,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton, who is also assistant chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, said an increased likelihood of reporting incidents, as well as an increase in incidents, accounted for the spike.
He said there was a direct link to the vote. “Some people took that as a licence to behave in a racist or other discriminatory way. We can not divorce the country’s reaction to the referendum and the increase in hate crime reporting.”
Offences were mainly harassment and threats of a racist nature, said Hamilton, directed against “visible minorities” as well as people from eastern European. He said the number of reports had fallen in recent days and was returning to what police were used to.
There were geographical variations in the spike. Increases were seen in the Metropolitan police area, covering London, home to the largest population of ethnic minorities. Avon and Somerset police, covering Bristol and the west country, and Greater Manchester police recorded higher numbers of reported hate crime, while in one force area the rate dropped marginally.
Police figures released on Friday showed a large rise in reported incidents, averaging more than 200 a day. Police said 3,076 hate crimes and incidents were reported to forces across the UK between 16 and 30 June; one week before and one week after the vote on 23 June.
The 42% rise in incidents being reported to police amounted to an increase of 915 reports compared with the same time last year. The real figures could be higher, with past studies suggesting just one in four hate crimes are reported to police. A total of 289 offences were recorded on 25 June, the first full day after the referendum result was announced.
Historically, police have struggled to convince communities affected by hate crime that they should take such offences seriously. Surveys show the vast majority of hate crime – 85% – is race related.
Police believe just one in four incidents are reported to them. Thus 52,000 hate crimes were recorded by police last year but a national crime survey suggested 225,000 was the real figure.
Hamilton said something about the referendum had triggered the incidents.“I do not believe it suddenly emerged. Some people felt it gave licence to vent views or behaviour,” he said.
“The action of someone who carries out a hate crime is motivated by a desire to intimidate or frighten others. It is trying to exclude the other and having a supremacist view.”

Re: Police blame worst rise in recorded hate crime on EU referendum
A week or so after we voted leave, and the race hate crimes that were splashed all across the media and being discussed by every politician who managed to get air time were being blamed on Brexit voters, Greater Manchester Police made a statement that there was no increase in reported race hate crimes in Greater Manchester.
Two days later a police spokesman from Greater Manchester said that since the Brexit vote, reported race hate crimes had increased by 50%.
Both were reported on local BBC news.
It's difficult to know for sure what is happening and who's strings are being pulled.
I can imagine that some racists now feel at liberty to speak or act openly instead of just thinking it.
Or are the media playing up every race hate incident that previously would have gone unreported?

I wonder how many of these alleged incidents were against white British people by disgruntled foreigners...?

You missed the important point there, eds. For Stormee, racism is synonymous with patriotic. He is the true, dyed-in-the-wool racist.

Race hate works all ways. Since Brexit people just assume it's directed against people who were not born and bred here.

I reckon a load of it has been against white British from disgruntled foreigners...
And the number of anti semetic attacks by Muslims is rising too...

I have noticed some ill feeling lately. Jewish people settled well here decades ago, the sudden rise of anti semetic attacks is very alarming.
White Brits are often singled out as the main cause of racial/religious discrimination....often that's not the case.

The point is, and I mean this sincerely, I don't want people who migrate here for work or marriage or refugee status reasons, to feel unwanted. That's not nice.
Imagine if I decided to move to another country and was made to feel like a leper.
It must feel awful.
It does take work on both sides to make a multi-cultural society successful.

I cant see how racial discrimination or hate crimes against people of a different colour, creed, race, religion can ever be solved if the bigger picture isn't looked at.

I know that happens, but I cannot say I've personally experienced it.
When I lived in a flat we had a Pakistani family upstairs to us. Every Ramadam they would bring me food
The guys (the oldest brothers) were really kind and very chatty. I often had a good chat about religion and stuff with them.
I've never experienced racism from Asians, only black girls when I dated black men.

Personally never have I Eddie, and we have lots of Pakistani neighbours....they don't socialise (or even look) at the white, Indian, Jewish people who live locally, but neither do they show disrespect to anyone.
However...I live not far from Heywood, Rochdale....and it's a very different case there for white girls and women.
The good thing about you (and many others) is that just because you have not personally experienced any racial discrimination...(apart from the girls when you possibly dated someone they fancied for themselves) you don't assume that no one else has.

No Syl, I wouldn't assume white people hadn't had racism occur toward them; there's ignorance in every race.

Polish guys turned a simple £3 a go car wash by me into a ultra modern car wash, valeting and you name it kind of centre.
If you want your car windows tinted or your van sign written etc they can do it so no they aren't all bad at all but some are and those are the ones who stick in your craw
Don't you have any English white people stuck in your craw?

Many years ago, I went shopping in the old Arndale and approached a unit selling black hair products. I was only browsing but got told to leave as there was no 'whitey stuff here for you'. The reason I'd looked in the first place was because I have black friends who use certain products I thought smelled really nice and I was just curious. Trust me, I've had some very hostile responses from Asian stores too. Things like being ignored and passed over for people further down the queue. It's rare, but it has happened. People think because you're white you don't suffer this kind of thing, but it goes on.

It is too bad that you were treated that way. There is no accounting for rudeness, I guess.
I have walked into the same type of store here in America, and was treated most cordially. And that's in America, where you might expect that resentment might be more pronounced. Of course, the clerk and I might kid around about how such products would not go with my complexion, but that is all in the framework of good fellowship and humor.

And a good mantra...one that I'm proud of. Never make claims that you can't substantiate. Here you are making a judgment that people who serve a limited market are racists. Lots of people serve a limited market: hobbyists, toy stores, farmers, solar power installers...the list is endless. They may have their biases, but you can't say they hate everyone else. Certainly not racist, fgs.
