Tornado Hit 23 miles SWest of My Home Last Night - County Seat - Nursing Home Hit
9:45pm my NOAA weather alarm started going off; telling me to take cover - tornado on the ground and moving out of Eureka headed towards my area - grabbed my flash lights - med box - headed to the basement - came back up put collars & leashes on the 2 dogs and back down into the basement - stayed down there until my portable radio stated there was an 'ALL CLEAR' alert given and came up with my dogs - 11:10pm. Then the radio started giving the updates of the damage - numerous building hit in Eureka ...still dark - lots of damage but no fatalities as of yet.Tornado leaves widespread damage in Eureka

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -
Officials in Greenwood County have confirmed a tornado that hit the northern portion of Eureka at just before 10 p.m. Thursday has left widespread damage in the town.
Shortly after the storm Emergency Management Director Levi Vinson said crews were performing search and rescue operations looking for any possible victims in the storm.
A shelter has been set up for those displaced by the storm at the United Methodist Church, 521 N Main. Westar reported at least 2,800 customers were without power after the storm just before midnight.
Vinson also said the town's nursing home was struck by the storm and suffered damage, but a door-to-door search revealed no one was missing and no one hurt at the facility.
KAKE News has a crew live at the scene and will continue to update this situation as more information becomes available.

Wow. I'd imagine that can be pretty stressful.
It always amazes me how very different our lives can be from someone else's. I've never had to, and probably never will, run from a tornado.
Glad you and the waggy-tails are safe.

Waiting for sunrise and the evaluation from that area: the Nursing home - hospital - court house - my doctors office - the grocery store were all in that NW section of Eureka that was hit ...so not sure but it might mean my appointment for the 19th gets relocated to another sight, some where.

Oh, I've no idea; that's our country seat and historically a town filled with 3 story old houses and huge old trees so I'd imagine that this is one humongous tree debris and power line - building material disaster mess.
It's all going to take time...my mom had been in that nursing home for rehab for 3 months - there are 4-5 neighbors that work over there; what a mess!

Around here it's like after so many days of 109º temps and those 90% humidity days --- one can just feel the pressure building and all it takes is just a upper atmosphere cool front and **BAM** we have tornado activity popping and dropping out of the skies. And this time of year the scary bastards happen more at night time then they do during the day - harder to see and if it wasn't for those human volunteers that stay out trying to keep an eye to the sky - well, the radar will only give a general idea that there 'could be tornado/vortex activity' ...it's the storm spotter that sees the tornado on the ground hidden in that rain wrapped storm front in between the lightening strikes or power line explosions. Those blessed humans are valued beyond measure.

Tornado hits Eureka, homes and businesses hit, search underway
KSN-TV Published: July 7, 2016, 10:05 pm Updated: July 8, 2016, 6:47 am
Homes damaged, tree limbs and power lines down in Eureka after tornado, July 7, 2016 (KSNW)
EUREKA, Kan. (KSNW) – A tornado caused damage to homes, businesses and a nursing home in Eureka, Thursday night and emergency crews are searching for any potential victims.
So far there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities, but emergency officials said they will know more in the morning.
“We’ll know when the sun comes up,” said Greenwood County Emergency Preparedness Director, Levi Vinson. “The little bit that I did see, was a lot of devastation, and I anticipate it to be worse in the morning, when the sun comes up.”
Part of the Eureka Nursing Center, a nursing home, was hit. Residents were moved to a safe area of the building. Crews will evacuate the nursing home Friday morning.
“They’re sheltering in place, they do have a generator, and they’re going to stay in there the remainder of the night and in the morning they’re going to move to a different facility,” said Vinson.
There has been structural damage to numerous buildings and homes. KSN Crews on the scene report tree limbs covering the roads, power lines down and homes with roofs torn off.

Vinson said trees and power lines were causing difficult travel conditions for first responders. Emergency crews also were having a difficult time accessing the damage in the rural part of the county.
There were initial reports that the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka had been hit by the tornado, but officials now say that’s not the case.
Greenwood County Emergency Management said there was widespread damage and people have been displaced from their homes. Residents who are displaced are asked to report to the Methodist Church where a shelter has been set up.
The Red Cross in Wichita is responding to Eureka to provide services to those affected by the tornado.

Butler County dispatchers said their EMS and rescue crews are headed to Eureka to assist in the city’s recovery operations.
The Elk County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management offices are sending personnel to assist in Eureka. Officials say they’ve had a strong response from other communities.
“We have Butler County, Lyon County, Woodson County, Elk County, Coffey County,” said Vinson. “They’ve all responded and offered assistance, we’ve had multiple agencies across the state getting a hold of us and offering us support.”

This was a unique storm front; dropped out of the sky as this vortex rolled from the north to the south east ...tornado dropped into town just missing the hospital {my dr's office too} and rolled into the area where the nursing home and several down town businesses were located and many homes. Amazing, both for the path that this tornado took and the number of homes/businesses and no loss of life - YET.
We get these storms all of the time but these past several tornadoes that have hit in KS have had unusual patterns; dropping out of a storm front moving from the north to the south or straight west to east has not been the 'NORMAL' for tornadoes to travel.
Guess my planned shopping trip won't be to that favorite grocery store ...I'm headed to Emporia, to the north of me.

Our local Newspaper lady just up loaded some photo's via her FB page >
This was a working feed grinding elevator just south of the nursing home in Eureka
this is the North end of the nursing home - the Alzheimer's unit so none of the residents had bedrooms along this wall - they doubled up residents into other rooms and had enough generators to maintain them through the night; today they're being relocated 'OUT' to other facilities that will have room for them. There is just one other LTC facility in Eureka.
Seen from up above {via a drone} the tornado didn't stay on the ground - it whipped around quite a bit before it finally settled down and drove through town >
Passed a convoy of our 'WestStar' electrical company headed down here early this morning as I was headed north to go get supplies - they've got lots of work to get power back up and reset all of those downed poles >
Quirky thing those tornadoes are; contents of this garage, barely touched but the building itself - sucked up and blown away >
a family of 5 were assisted out from under this home ...hunkered down in their basement saved all of them and their 3 dogs - 2 cats too >
Roof sheared off one home and the neighbors double wide {manufactured home} was lifted up off of it's foundation and set back down - just at an odd angle >
Now, I don't know who's homes these were or what the address was, but that dude that but down those hard wood floors gets an 'atta boy' in my DIY notebook; that home took a direct hit and that floor stayed 'PUT' ...it's still laying right there! Amazing >
Well, this was a 1½ story home; meaning that there was more rooms up stairs - now it's just wide open spaces - no roof - nothing >
Well, that's all for now ...but we're still our heads over here {northeast of this sight} wondering HTH our 'take cover' alarms were going off when this tornado dropped out of this storm - coming in from the north, traveled moving SouthEast and was 18 miles away from our town! But many of us did as our NOAA weather alarms told us too - get in your storm shelters and do so NOW!
So I did...just never know; those insidious/sneaky bastard tornadoes sometimes run in packs

So this is the funnel cloud that our spotter saw that set off our 'NOAA tornado alarm' last night and sent me into the basement >
And this is the one that was captured through the rain wrap & showed up when the lightening illuminated it as it was dropping into Eureka >
That's the tornado, just to the left of all that visual lightening display!

Our local newspaper lady {the nice person sharing these photo's} got an opportunity to interview the man that owns this interesting stash of acquired STUFF >
Upon closer inspection ...those are a huge number of vintage motorcycle parts and rare antique motorcycles that he's been collecting since back in the early 70's and other than his building being insured he never gave it a 2nd thought to have his collection appraised and insured!
NOW THAT'S LUCKY - he's not done an real inventory check list but just his initial review ...it appears that nothing's been removed/sucked up/taken away by the tornado
