Don't remember coal sellers, but remember the "rag and bone" man with his horse and cart shouting "ragabone" and giving out goldfish and day old chicks in exchange for a few old clothes.

y es they did major, I also remember a horse pulling a closed cart with

"Hardings Bakery" on the side, the man would deliver bread and cakes to customers from a large basket he carried, his horse would wait until he was a hundred yards or more away then follow him down the road and wait again. This will be of no interest to anyone under 65!!!

I remember in Abington, Pennsylvania, an old black man in a one-horse buckboard, slowly making his way up Old York Road, to park in front of the Old Forge Inn, and go inside to have a few pops.

The horse waited patiently, confident that the old man would return.

My OH's dad had a horse and cart to deliver the milk....in those days there was also knocker upper.....a man who would knock on peoples bedroom windows with a long pole to wake them up around 5am for work.

When we first married we had milk deliveries, paper boys delivering papers, club men collecting weekly payments for stuff you were buying on tic.....all things of the past now round here.

In order to train buggy horse's to STAY; they have to be trained to 'THINK' that this weighted hunk of metal is going to keep them in one place - it's a 'Tie Down' for horse drawn carriages/buggy/carts/wagons!

I've got several that my grandfather made by hand and put his brand on them.
Some large one's some smaller ones; but there was a halter strap tied to this when the driver was off from behind the seat, even with the hand brake applied to a carriage/buggy/cart/wagon ...if the horse became fidgety in the harness and moved side-step it could dislodge the 'brake' and then the carriage/buggy/cart/wagon would be mobile ...but if the horse was trained to 'STAY' and had that weight attached to his halter as a firm reminder {from ground to his halter} a well trained horse would stay put until the driver returned and unhooked the lead strap and placed the 'Tie Down' away. Yes, please do... cheers

Stormee/Major started this topic and it's fun!  He had another one going about 'Guess This Image' or something similar; place an image and we had to guess the famous person.
That was going for quite a while ...but it ebbs & flows with interest and people get busy.
But this could last for a while as well.

Drafting &/or landscape design until my husband purchased his auto-cad system then we could play on the computerized design layout!

Newspaper layout in the pre-computer era. I used quite a bit of them myself back in college -- for one semester, before we computerized. I've seen a lot of them over the years, though, as designers tend to hold onto them for nostalgic reasons.

You'd use those tools to measure, align, cut, crop and paste up articles, photos and ads onto a big sheet of ruled paper, then you'd (very carefully) ship that to pre-press, where each one would have a high-res photo taken of it, and those were turned into the printing plates:

Are any of us right though?
If not let the kid post another pic of a trade mans tools until someone gets it right then it's their turn to confuse us all.
Thousands of trades so this could prove to be interesting Wink
Rather a set of 'universal' type drafting tools that can be used for a wide variety of uses but mostly for drawing/blue prints/layout type of work... cheers

Ya, I knew that egg topper but I did LMAO at 333's guess for the bull castrator/nut cutter!  Do You Remember These? 3489511464  as small as that tool is it'd be more apt to work on small dogs or piglets - sure wouldn't fit any calves.

I would say a medieval bottle opener, but I don't think they had bottles with tops that needed prising off in medieval times.
