California surpasses France as 6th-largest economy in the world

California is now the sixth largest economy in the world, surpassing France thanks to a robust state economy and the strength of the U.S. dollar.
California was the world's eighth-largest economy as of last year, according to Irena Asmundson, chief economist of the California Department of Finance.
"California did exceptionally well in 2015," said Asmundson. "Lots of sectors did well."
California is home to diverse strong economies, including Silicon Valley and Hollywood. Manufacturing has performed well, as has the agriculture sector, despite a severe drought, said Asmundson.
The nation's most populous state has outpaced the rest of the U.S. on job growth. Its gross state product was $2.46 trillion, with 4.1 percent of state growth this year in real terms, according to the state's finance department.
Nationally, gross domestic product grew by 2.4 percent in 2015. Growth slowed to 0.8 percent in the first quarter of 2016.
I'm telling you, California should open its own shop.

Nah, California wants to continue to be able to attract people from the rest of the country, it has a fairly strong net inflow from other states. Nothing compared to Texas, of course, but still pretty strong

That's what they say, but it's not an answer. They were saying that back in the 1950's. I remember when I was in grade school, they were teaching us students how to crawl under desks and tables...telling us, the big one is coming.
We've only had the Loma Prieta quake, in 1989.

A long time could mean the fault has gone dormant or the tension is growing...with drastically opposite effect, obviously.

A FUNNY thing about when they talk about "one in one hundred year.." and "one in a thousand years.." when talking about earthquakes, floods, heat waves, fires, etc.
They're only talking about averages, not actual predictions.
Down here, it's not unusual to see two "one in a hundred year" intensity floods hit one region two or three times within a decade, and then nothing again for a long while..
And you see similar timings with earthquakes in parts of Japan and New Zealand -- some earthquakes only a couple of years apart, and then decades until the next serious one hits the same region.

England gets no real threats like that. We are very lucky I think.
I hope that you never see a big one in your lifetime Quill.

WHEN California eventually splits off from the US mainland, and sets sail westwards (ho ! ); then they can declare their independence...
And ask some other US territories like Hawaii, Guam and US West Samoa, and some of the 'neighbouring' sovereign states (like, say, Samoa and Fiji, oh and maybe Chile ?), if they'd consider forming a new Commonwealth..

Ocean-front property in Arizona, eh?
No, I'm very specific on who I'd let into the Pacific States of America. In addition to California, we will be taking in Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawai'i, and we will be inviting from other countries to join, British Columbia, Yukon Terr., Baja California Norte, and Baja California Sud (including Cabo ).
We will be looking to the west, primarily the Asia/Pacific for markets and development. We may even build a wall behind us. We implore all LW southerns to move to these states in order that they may join us. No guns will be allowed, all vehicles must be electric-powered or hybrid, and absolutely no neckties.
