Labour MP Jo Cox Shot Near Leeds

Labour MP Jo Cox has been shot and injured in Birstall in West Yorkshire, an eyewitness has said.

Ms Cox was elected as the MP for the Batley and Spen constituency at the general election in 2015 and has two children.

An eyewitness said the 41-year-old was left lying bleeding on the pavement after the incident.

The attack took place near the town's library where she held advice surgeries.

West Yorkshire Police said: "There is an ongoing incident in Birstall", while Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it was "aware" of an incident but had no further information.

How shocking....the man who shot her was just sat waiting to be arrested.
An elderly male member of the public tried to step in and was also hurt, though his injuries are not said to be life threatening.
