Mother ordered to stop ‘sexual’ breastfeeding in hospital
A young mother was told to stop publicly breastfeeding her four-month-old son while in hospital as it was deemed to be “sexual”.
18-year-old Darcie Pennington was visiting her grandmother at the Royal Liverpool Hospital when she started feeding her son Vincent.
She was approached by a female nurse who told her to move to a private room so as not to make other hospital visitors “uncomfortable”.
“I went to sit down with my nan and feed my son, shaking and very upset,” Darcie wrote in a Facebook post.
“The nurse then came over and slammed the curtains shut, telling me that I couldn’t feed him as there were males I would make feel uncomfortable.
“I asked her why I was being targeted and why she wasn’t promoting breastfeeding as a nurse I thought was strange, she told me she was protecting my dignity.
“I then asked her if I was feeding him a bottle would I receive the same treatment - she went on to say, ‘bottle feeding isn’t sexual.’
“Appalled by this comment I asked her what she found sexual about a baby having something to eat from his mum.
“I then had another nurse come over to me and felt very confronted and harassed.
“Me and my mum quickly got our belongings and left.”

Deputy chief nurse Colin Hont apologised on the hospital’s behalf saying: “We are aware of a complaint made by Ms Pennington in relation to visiting her relative who was recovering on a ward that is primarily used for recovery from breast and eye surgery.
“We have apologised for the distress that has been caused and we are currently looking into the matter and would be happy to discuss this further with Ms Pennington.
"We fully support breastfeeding and visitors to our hospitals are welcome to breast- feed where they choose to and feel most comfortable,” he added.
"We also offer private spaces for mothers who wish for privacy when breastfeeding. We work to maintain the privacy and dignity of all our patients and visitors."

Strikes me that some people would have called the suffragettes 'attention seekers'. 'Woman, know they place, don't complain, only men are allowed to do that' obviously hasn't died out yet.

I could see it making young boys uncomfortable and also some men, who are shy etc
It's not wrong to say that some people get uncomfortable - it is wrong to tell a woman to stop though.

I did Nicko, but you also said 'attention seeker' and it very rarely gets said about a man.
Young mums are doing a sterling job of making sure breast feeding is normalised again, and all power to them.

Why would a 'NURSE' opt for the reaction that she did, instead of suggesting that the gentleman: read a magazine, relocate to another chair facing in a different direction, remind him that this is mother natures way of feeding her young, isn't this where all mothers learn the 'HOW TO BREAST FEED', or just giggle - pat the moron on the head and stroll on about her job???sassy wrote:Strikes me that some people would have called the suffragettes 'attention seekers'. Tapped the link wondering how anyone could think a nursing mother was sexual, then saw the photo. Bingo! She's pretty, that must be what made it "sexual."

"Young boys.." ???
DON'T you mean a minority of immature and repressed teens and old men, and jealous wowserish old wimmin' folk eddie ???
I HAVE NEVER seen "young boys" disturbed by breastfeeding women -- on the contrary, younger children are the least disturbed by such things ! It is only when they are old enough to pick up on, and be influenced by negative reactions by a minority of prudish and priggish adults around them, they start acting in a nervous or uncertain manner themselves..

LMAO...my first thought was; some old pervert probably got caught getting a 'trouser tent' and when his wife/buddy/nurse noticed it - then he got embarrassed and flustered and blamed the young mother, instead of his own perverted mindset!

A CERTAIN minority of young mothers are attention seekers -- that's only human nature...
ANOTHER minority will be the militant types pushing a pro-breastfeeding freedoms agenda..
HAVING said that, the great majority who are either surprised, affronted or confused by negative reactione such as that 'nurse's' may often well be those who have grown up accepting such things (the breastfeeding..) as natural among their family, friends, neighbours ?
WHAT'S GET TO ME MORE these days, is how many young people are so willing to post such detailed stories on Facebook and Twitter, knowing quite well that their stories could go 'viral' and around the world within a few hours ! MAYBE too many of them have grown up watching shows like Oprah and Ellen ?

And look at all of the MEDIA methods they have at their disposal now days for just 'pushing their persona' out there; I can't quite wrap my brain around it...but we {my farming peer group} were kept far too busy for such wasted time & energy that seems so prevalent in todays social groups.WhoseYourWolfie wrote:nicko wrote:

But my astonishment for this 'knee-jerk' reaction from a nursing staff member makes me wonder if the old fart with the 'hard-on' wasn't a power player in the community/possible hospital administrator type human/old family friend of that nurse. This entire story, just seems like the nurse has more to tell for the WHY/WHAT her reasoning's were

That made me laugh...and there is possibly some truth in it.
I don't see how any woman, especially a trained nurse, could ever imply that breast feeding was sexual when done in public.
I do think a minority of women flaunt breast feeding as a way to get attention....hence the rush to tell their stories to the papers rather than resolve it with the people who object.

I doubt anyone got an erection over a partially exposed boob.
Some men and young teens find it uncomfortable and that's their right.
Some of you get all flummoxed and red-faced over the word c@nt and its four letters arranged a certain way.
Why is it hard to believe that some men may get uncomfortable? How about Orthodox Jews?
Women have a right to breastfeed in public and more places should provide nice little quiet niches for just this (nicer for babies too).

My OH gets uncomfortable...we usually discreetly swap seats if a mum is feeding directly in front of him....that's his problem not the mums.
I have only ever seen a couple of women deliberately flaunting breast feeding....and that's not really comfortable for anyone when they make a big production of it.

RE: MANY of those common swear words...
THEY were actually the common useage terms in Olde Englische, and not curse words back when, but after the Norman Invasion -- when French became the preferred language among the Aristocracy and Merchant classes in merry ol' England -- several of those olde worlde words were relegated to the new crude and rude swear words, while vagina, intercourse, penis and anus were the ''polite" alternatives..
UNTIL eventually, they too became 'unmentionable' words in polite company during the Victorian era.
SO ENDS tonight's linguistics lecture.. Class dismissed...

On subject of Victorian sensibilities, in the American Civil War era, it was taboo to say 'breast'. One had to say 'bosom'. How weird would that be if you were carving and serving chicken.

And it's not a 'matter of being ', understanding utter BS and crude gutter speak seems beyond the depth of some jolly ole' English! But I won't smear the entire nation because of some LAME/LAZY ones that just amuse themselves in such crude ways.

Now we just say "bazoomba" regardless of context, as in, "the issue of bazoomba-feeding in public," or "boneless honey-roasted chicken bazoomba"
Re: Mother ordered to stop ‘sexual’ breastfeeding in hospital
Hahahahaha I call them bazoombas too. Its a great word and much better than breasts.
In any case, who calls them "breasts" when being sexual????? I can think of sexier words.

Why, once your qualities were clearly stated:

Well, that was pretty much self explanatory for your vocabulary standards!

Weirdest term I ever heard was "golden bozos," it was either a movie or a stand-up routine in the 80s.

Actually, I tracked it down and it was a Steve Martin monologue on Saturday Night Live -- really funny:
You probably heard I was into the comedy thing. Kind of getting out of that now.. into a little more serious deal. And so that's why right now I'd like to talk about "What.. I.. Believe.."
[ heavy music starts to play ]
"What I Believe."
I believe in rainbows and puppy dogs and fairy tales.
And I believe in the family - Mom and Dad and Grandma.. and Uncle Tom, who waves his penis.
And I believe 8 of the 10 Commandments.
And I believe in going to church every Sunday, unless there's a game on.
And I believe that sex is one of the most beautiful, wholesome and natural things.. that money can buy.
And I believe it's derogatory to refer to a woman's breasts as "boobs", "jugs", "winnebagos" or "golden bozos".. and that you should only refer to them as "hooters".
And I believe you should put a woman on a pedestal.. high enough so you can look up her dress.
And I believe in equality, equality for everyone.. no matter how stupid they are, or how much better I am than they are.
And, people say I'm crazy for believing this, but I believe that robots are stealing my luggage.
And I believe I made a mistake when I bought a 30-story 1-bedroom apartment.
And I believe the Battle of the Network Stars should be fought with guns.
And I believe that Ronald Reagan can make this country what it once was - an arctic region covered with ice.
And, lastly, I believe that of all the evils on this earth, there is nothing worse than the music you're listening to right now. That's what I believe.

I'm now sure where we'd find it; but aren't so many of our written text books {ie encyclopedia/dictionaries} were they written by the 'male hand'...doesn't it stand to reason that they were the ones that decided what names to call our female body parts and clothing?
For instance; my first word that seriously made me double over LMAO - was brassiere

And anytime my 2 older sisters heard my brother and I say that word they would chase us and try to shove the bar of 'LAVA' into our mouth --- we got real good at muttering it right behind them at the most opportune times!
