Authorities: Snowmobile made several hits at Iditarod teams

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A man on a snowmobile purposely drove into two dog teams competing in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race early Saturday morning, killing one dog and injuring at least three others, officials said.
Mushers Aliy Zirkle (AL-ee ZUR-cul) and Jeff King were attacked outside the village of Nulato (noo-LAH-toh), a community of 236 on the Yukon River a little more than halfway into the 1,000-mile (1,600-kilometer) race to Nome.
A suspect has been identified by a village police officer.
Race marshal Mark Nordman said Saturday that Zirkle, 46, who finished second three times from 2012-2014, was mushing from Kokukuk (KOY'-yoo-kuk) to Nulato, a run of less than 20 miles (32.19 kilometers) on the Yukon River, when she was hit.
The snowmobile hit the side of Zirkle's sled at 5 miles (8.05 kilometers)out of Koyukuk, turned around multiple times and came back at her before driving off, Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said by email.
The snowmobile reappeared 12 miles (19.31 kilometers) out of Nulato. He revved up and was pointed at Zirkle before leaving, Peters said.
One dog on her team was bruised. Officials described the injury as non-life-threatening.
King, a four-time Iditarod champion, was behind Zirkle and fared worse.
When King reached the vicinity, he was struck from behind by the snowmobile and at least three of his dogs were hit.
Nash, a 3-year-old male, was killed. Crosby, another 3-year-old male, and Banjo, a 2-year-old male, received injuries and are expected to survive.
Race officials said King received medical attention in Nulato, but troopers quoted King as saying he was not injured.
Troopers also said five of King's dogs were injured.
Zirkle left Nulato with 14 dogs at 6:16 a.m., after dropping one dog in the village. She was in third place.
The race leader is former champion Mitch Seavey, who reached Kaltag at 7:41 a.m.
Brent Sass was running second. He left Nulato at 3:43 a.m.
Reigning champ Dallas Seavey, the son of Mitch Seavey, was in fourth place. He left Nulato at 7:14 a.m.

Indeed...
A man was arrested Saturday in connection with two incidents in which a snowmobile crashed into sled teams during Alaska's Iditarod sled dog race, killing one dog and injuring at least three others.
Alaska State Troopers say Arnold Demoski of Nulato is being held on two counts of assault, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and six counts of criminal mischief.
A message left for Demoski was not immediately returned.
He told the Alaska Dispatch News that he had not intentionally driven into the dog teams of Aily Zirkle and Jeff King, but he had blacked out while returning from drinking in another village.

They should leave that lying little piece of cowardly shite with a few of those Iditarod contestants for a few hours, and let 'natural justice' take its course...
"Blacked out.." ? In a pig's eye he blacked out. Plain old fashioned psychotic jealousy and spite, more likely..
How many times to we see feral snow mobilers described as the snowfields equivalent of those jet ski and dirt bike hoons, terrorists and vandals ?

AND THE IDITAROD WINNER IS ~~~
I can't imagine, the training and the gut wrenching fatigue; but starting out with 7 dogs and then having to eliminate 2 due to a stomach but and then one more along the way~~~finishing first - let alone with just 4 dogs! AMAZING...

NOME, Alaska — Dallas Seavey did more with less this year at the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
He set a record pace early Tuesday morning when he won his third straight Iditarod and fourth race in the last five years. And he did it with just six dogs, after starting the race nearly 1,000 miles across Alaska with 16.
No other musher this year has fewer dogs.
And the record Seavey beat? It was the one he set in 2014, when he brought only seven dogs into Nome.
"The key is always to run the dogs you have, on the trail you have, the best way you can moving forward," Seavey said.
This year a virus hit two of his dogs hard, and he said it was apparent on the first day of the race he'd have to drop them. One, a dog named Hero who led him to Nome last year, hurt the most, he said.
Worry set in when he lost two more dogs.
"Then you try to formulate a plan using those elements that might be able to get you to Nome quickly," he said. "It was a concern, but not a showstopper."
Seavey completed the nearly 1,000-mile race in a record time of 8 days, 11 hours, 20 minutes, 16 seconds. He arrived in Nome at 2:20 a.m.
He said at the finish that he spent the first two-thirds of the race "dead on my feet" and had never been so tired.
"This was a heck of a trip, all the way from the start. It was up and down," said Seavey, who picked up $75,000 and a new pickup for winning the race.
