Racism? Something happened at the 2016 Oscars...
Chris Rock was the host of the 2016 Oscars, this year.
He's black, liberal, Democrat, and an ardent Obama supporter.
Even his stand-up comedy is 100% pro-Obama, pro-liberal, and very anti-conservative/Republican/Bush.
I only mention his political proclivities as background, for those who aren't familiar with him or his comedy material.
During his opening monologue at the 2016 Oscars, Rock wasted no time confronting the big elephant in the room: Hollywood racism.
You can watch Chris Rock's opening monologue in its entirety, here:
http://oscar.go.com/news/oscar-news/chris-rock-opening-2016-oscars
Is it true? Are Hollywood Liberals racists? Are most liberals racist but are just subtle about it, in a "sorority racist" kind of way?
I'm not labeling anyone a racist. This is just to open a forum to discuss. I hadn't really thought about Hollywood being racist until all the protests of the Oscars, and then Chris Rock affirming it's existence, albeit in a comedic forum.

http://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/feb/29/chris-rock-at-the-oscars-youre-damn-right-hollywoods-racist“Is Hollywood racist?” he asked. “You’re damn right Hollywood’s racist.” Rock qualified his comments by saying that the industry was not “burning cross racist ... it’s a different type of racist”.
The host then told a story about attending a fundraiser at the White House, and telling the President that his fellow – white – showbiz guests “don’t hire black people and they’re the nicest white people on earth; they’re liberals.”
"Their prejudice", he continued, "is 'sorority racist'; like ‘We like you, Ronda, but you’re not a Kappa.’”

"Are most 'liberals' racist ?"
You really are a deadset trolling fuckwit, aren't you Mr. 'No Original Thoughts'...
Have you ever, ever, ever been able to think original and coherent thoughts for yourself, or do you simply continue spamming forums with your regurgitated baseless fascist and extremist drivel ?
I have yet to see a single well-thought-through post from you !
And no, witless one, most "liberals aren't racist", though you - like many ultra-conservatives - most likely are..

It's amazing that I've been allowed to stay here for so long, what with me being such a troll, isn't it?
Perhaps you should beg admin to ban me because you think I'm a troll, even though you haven't been here for months, and when you are here, you have several different accounts. All you've done since you started posted again is to troll, go off topic, and get abusive for no apparent reason.

Isn't it a bit stupid for a black man who was hired to host the Oscars to claim that black people don't get hired?

It's an entirely different job, though both are well-compensated.
Some have argued that the hiring of Chris Rock was tokenism, aimed at smoothing over the unrest that arises due to lack of roles for blacks in the film industry.

How many Black people have hosted the Oscars? I can only remember that Whoopi Goldberg did it a few years ago.Original Quill wrote:Raggamuffin wrote:Isn't it a bit stupid for a black man who was hired to host the Oscars to claim that black people don't get hired?

So if a black person isn't asked to do something....its "racist"
And if a black person is asked to do something it's "tokenism"

Not having a complete history of the how/why you've come to the conclusion that 'HOLLYWOOD IS LIBERAL' when the rare examples are of actors taking a stand for specific humanitarian and save the animals issue ---
But often people see a single media printed article {same identical topic} printed / reprinted into various magazines and media talking heads and assume that there is indeed a wealth/majority of "LIBERALS" living/working in HOLLYWOOD!
Are you too young to remember all of the hype/hysteria provided by Joseph McCarthy? And if you're too young - there's always the many articles/books written about those years.
Or click on this link and read about it >>>
The "Witch Hunts" were methods employed by Conservative Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy during the cold war. He basically said he had a list of Communist sympathizers that were able to infiltrate the government, these claims were however, unfounded, which eventually lead to his censure and political decline as fellow Conservatives and Republicans saw him as a liability.
The term McCarthyism means to accuse someone of disloyalty, treason, and/or subversion without evidence. People who questioned McCarthyists were branded as communists, traitors, etc. http://www.answers.com/Q/What_was_the_The_McCarthy_Witch_Hunts
Would you really think/believe that given those heinous action during those 'witch hunt years' that anyone {entertainers speaking/doing commercials are the exceptions} within the entertainment community would actually share whom they vote for or what party affiliation they prefer??? NOT HARDLY...
But it's not surprising that the 'LIBERAL' label gets trashed and often around here; the method for opinion building seems to be mandated by rumor/innuendo/and hysteria but not much else!
ABOUT THE RACE ISSUE AND THE OSCARS:
It was a sad - sad - issue that the remake of 'MAD MAX' could garner 10 nominations and win {what 6 Oscars} many yet the other really fantastic films with actors such as Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation) didn't get mentioned
While this has been an issue in prior years {some time back} the gross numbers of nominees for 'MAD MAX' led me to firmly believe that the Oscar ballots get mailed out to that select group of humans and then they just either ignore the ballot or turn it over to their teenagers to mark at whim!
If the ballots aren't verified as to 'WHOM' is really submitting the return envelope then the process was in dire need of changing and that's exactly what the Oscar director and committee is going to do!
BTW - I just used the teeny-bobber film 'Mad Max' as the #1 example for my shock; but there were others as equally over-blown/over-used and the genre just another 'been there done that theme'...

Re: Racism? Something happened at the 2016 Oscars...
I was surprised 'Mad Max' featured so strongly at the Oscars....it's not the sort of film that usually gets all the accolades.
Idris Elba is not only black he is English.....two things that probably didn't go in his favour at the American Oscars.

Hmmm, weren't the Oscar nomination list released in Jan '?' around the middle of the month?
So scheduling a emcee - in order to have their #1 option clear their schedule --- the committee asked Chris Rock many months prior to the actual list being released!
Of course I'm not privy to what the Emcee gets paid but there have been some huge success and some really bad written scripts and the viewing audiences have waned in the last 10 years because it just takes so dang long to get it OVER!
This won't be Rock's first time hosting the Academy Awards. He hosted the 2005 Oscars, one of the most-watched ceremonies of the past decade. Since his last time at the mic, Ellen DeGeneres hosted twice (2007, 2014). So did Jon Stewart (2006, 2008). Other celebrity emcees included Hugh Jackman (2009), Billy Crystal (2012), Seth MacFarlane (2013) and Neil Patrick Harris (2015).

Precisely...and at first I thought that 'hmmm, perhaps it was ignored because it wasn't released widely in America but on a PAY PER VIEW/Netflix type of media provider'...but then I read that that issue had been changed a couple of years back for Oscar contention.
But it was such a phenomenal film {based on a true story} to be shunned by so many of the ballots that were returned. This entire process just make me feel/think that the adults that receive those Oscar ballots just turn them over to their teenagers and say 'Here, knock yourself out'!

My thoughts exactly. I'm simply presenting the counter-argument. More in support of your thesis: Chris Rock was the announcer in past years. And the way the Oscars work, they tend to carry-over the same announcers from year to year. So it was more a matter of continuity.
However, the argument is that they might have lost Rock in the wake of the controversy, so they did everything they could to keep him. And of course, who knows what the Committee knew and was anticipating. Last year had no black nominees, as well. I'm sure these things are well studied.

DITTO...if I wanted to be WOWED by computerized scenery and animated photography I'd rent more 'animated/children's' type of movie genre.

The sound quality in a lot of modern films is dire.
How come decades ago you could hear every word the actors said....nowadays you often have to turn the volume up because it's so fuzzy.

Unfortunately --- those 'DOLBY SURROUND SOUND' speakers at the theaters are OMG - blow your ear drums out and make the seats shake with the volume of the bass and explosions.
I've often wondered why the human that works in the projection room, just pushes in the DVD and leaves the room once the movie starts --- there used to be a projection operator that would adjust the sound meter accordingly so people weren't exposed to such high audible sounds that make your ears ring!
My mom had a hearing aid on one side --- she'd nearly throw her drink & pop corn up in the air from the pain that those audible would cause her.
And the last really - not well edited film that set my hair on fire was a Harrison Ford - Indiana Jones movies---those shots were so dark --- most of the movie was just wasted because you couldn't see WTH was going on.
The Temple of DOOM >>>
Guess they just need to phone me up and allow me to edit that film footage - HUH!

Hmmm... I've read the story of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf", but I don't think I've ever read "The Troll Who Cried Troll" until reading WhoseYourWolfie's post. He wins the Potty Mouth award:

I've never been to Hollywood, much less interact with people in the entertainment industry. That said, it really piqued my interest to hear Chris Rock denounce his fellow liberal friends/co-workers/associates/employers as being "sorority racists".
Aside from Potty Mouth's unhinged rant, I really haven't read a post from anyone that acknowledges or firmly denies Rock's charge of liberal racism. Let's keep in mind, I'm not the one suggesting if such racism exists or to what extent. Chris Rock went on live television in front of 34-million viewers and publicly charged the Hollywood liberals of being racist. He is full of crap? Or no?

Do you think the shot-callers are liberals? They're capitalists who run one of the most profitable industries in the world. There was a big push for the studios to funnel money into the campaign of a Republican Congressman who was supposed to look out for them during the debate over SOPA: https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20150416/18032930681/mpaas-chris-dodd-tells-each-movie-studio-to-donate-40k-to-rep-goodlattes-election-campaign.shtml

It always kills me when conservatives like you accuse movie makers of being liberal or socialist. They're about as socialist as Microsoft
Well you are most definitely a regressive socialist, that is for sure
So where you are happy to label this poster, the moment they label people you get your knickers in a twist. lol
Hypocrite much?
Actually, I was just making an observation myself. It doesn't bother me that IT is so rankled about Chris Rock's politics, I just find it funny.

Are you that thick for real?
Are you? I can read between the lines, Skippy -- don't blame me if you lack that ability.
No I just think its very amusing how you label people and they when they label people you show up what a hypocritical idiot you are.
I blame you for being that hateful to people with different views to you that you have an inability to debate them, where instead all you can do is label and mock them
Hence I have been giving you some of your own immature treatment

Have you ever seen me refer to someone as "it" before? I don't do that, I find it highly disrespectful.
I won't even tolerate my reporters turning in stories that say something like "The team has one player in particular that has been on a hot streak." I'll always change that to "who." People should always be referred to by personal pronouns.

You just did refer to Independent that way and its just about the most rude way you could refer to them and even worse to then come out with the bullshit that you did
How on earth do you expect others to respect you when you make a mockery of your own stance?

Can you not see how ridiculous a stance you made on this yesterday when then you refer to a poster as IT and then claim its an abbreviation?
Can you not see how that looks?

Ben:
I can assure you that I'm not "rankled" by Rock's politics.
I just posted a comedy clip in which he roasts the Republicans and makes Obama sound like a legendary hero... but, me factually stating Rock's political stance is sufficient to draw the conclusion that I'm a Bush fan?
Wut?
Fast-forward to the 6:40 mark.
In the event anyone else experiences difficulties finding the portion of the monologue that has sparked debate, you can watch it at the following link:

To all:
Try attacking the topic, instead of me. If Rock's accusations are baseless and manufactured, then just say so. I don't think you should get worked up simply because it's been spotlighted as a topic of discussion.

Oh --- boy, don't go getting sensitive --- not around here; the slightest innuendo and the TROLLS come a running! LMAO
No, I just wasn't getting your connected dots from the Oscar Racial issue and how you were tying that together with 'LIBEAL' ideology! Frankly, it's all a moot point for me...I don't get a phone call/not a ballot to vote/nor does my Independent voting ideas mean that this will influence this topic.
But thanks for the conversation --- never worthless when the ADULTS chat up a topic!

It is irrelevant
How can you tell others you will not respond to a poster being called it and then call a poster IT
Its a contradiction no matter what he meant

Re: Racism? Something happened at the 2016 Oscars...
Because he just shortened his name which just so happens to be the word "it"
Promise you, I knew what he meant as I have seen him use that abbreviation before.

Can you not see that?

I have no problem referring to Phil as "it", and I don't care if Ben doesn't approve.
