Heartwarming pictures show abandoned chimp's joy at finally seeing a friendly face
Heartwarming pictures show the 40-year-old animal laughing as Estelle Raballand, director of the Chimpanzee Conservation Center, paid him
a visit

Lonely: Ponso the chimp was dumped after being used for lab experimentsAfter years of being used for lab experiments, this chimpanzee was dumped on an island without food and water and watched all his companions die.
But the cruel treatment he has received at the hands of man has not dimmed the joy Ponso feels in seeing a human face.

Joy: Ponso was delighted to see a friendly face
The images show him clasping her in a huge hug and appearing to grin as she reaches out to touch him.
Ponso has been by himself for nearly three years after his wife and children died.
His only contact since then has been with Germain, a villager who occasionally brought him bread and bananas as there was nothing else to eat.

Help: A visiting islander, Germain has kept Ponso alive
Ponso was one of 20 chimps, all between the ages of seven to 11 years old, abandoned on the island off the Ivory Coast after being used for testing by the New York Blood Center.
The chimps, many captured from the wild, were used for hepatitis research. They endured biopsies, were anaesthetised and were chained by their necks to jungle gyms, according to The Dodo .

Alone: The chimp lives on a poor diet of bananas and bread
After the tests were completed, the lab reportedly transferred the chimps to a string of islands, intermittently dropping off food and water because there was none in the chimps' new homes.
Eleven died within months after the relocation and the nine surviving chimps were moved once again.

Disease and hunger soon left only Ponso, his mate and their two children standing.
But at the end of 2013 they died within days of each other, and Ponso was now completely alone.

Hug: His treatment by humans has not put him off them
Germain, who had been caring for the entire family, said Ponso helped bury them.
According to the villager, until a few years ago, a team came every three months to vaccinate the chimps. But then one day, everything stopped.
A fundraising page has been launched to make sure Ponso has proper food and help him eventually be relocated.

Abandoned: He is not the only chimp left on an island
Last year a campaign was launched to save 66 chimpanzees used at a testing lab in Liberia set up by the New York Blood Center in 1974.
It is claimed when research stopped in 2005 promises were made to care for the animals who are reliant on humans for food - but the company now says it has no obligation.

I hate loathe and detest animal experimentation and what they did to these poor creatures afterwards is absolutely unforgivable. Bastards!

Two stories have made me cry today...this one and the one about the baby dolphins.
Human beings can be such unfeeling morons.

Yes they can and also having a sense of humour about a poster helps, but then you do not know of him, so this may be lost on you
