WATCH: FBI releases LaVoy Finicium shooting video showing he went for his gun — twice

The FBI released video that clearly shows LaVoy Finicum reached toward his waist — twice — before he was fatally shot by law enforcement officers. Investigators released the full, 26-and-a-half video recorded from a helicopter overhead in hopes of knocking down conspiracy theories about the Arizona rancher’s death. His supporters, and one eyewitness, claimed Finicum died with his hands up in surrender.
The video, at about the 9:20 mark, shows Finicum jump out of his SUV with his hands outstretched from his sides after crashing into a snowbank.
One officer approaches from the front with a gun drawn, and Finicum reaches with his left hand toward the right side of his body.
He lifts his arms again and then turns to see a second officer come out of a wooded area behind him.
Finicum again reaches with his right hand toward the left side of his body, and the second officer shoots him.
It’s not clear how many rounds the officer fired, but the rancher falls to the snow, mortally wounded.
Investigators said Finicum was carrying a loaded 9 mm handgun in his pocket.

Yes, for once, the video shows the police acted in self-defense. Finicium had a 9-mm in the left, inside pocket of his coat, and he clearly reached in there twice.

Gd on the Oregon State Police. I knew, at least, the west wouldn't let me down.

Did he have two guns then? Because it says in the article he reached with his "left hand towards the right side of his body"
Then later he reached with his "right hand towards the left side of his body"

Don't suppose it matters much but would be nice to know if two guns were found on him?

Why would you use your left hand to get something out of your right pocket, and vice versa?

But as it turns out, he had no weapon on the right side (that I know of). His 9-mm was in the inside pocket of his coat, on the left side.

However, I believe he was the one who had declared (for the TV cameras) that he wouldn't be taken. He was certainly the driver of the vehicle that took flight, after the others had exited and surrendered. Furtive gestures must be heeded by police, particularly when they happen in quick succession..

It's always on the opposite side of your hand. One uses a cross-draw motion to remove something on the inner pockets of a coat. It's made that way.

He didn't have a holster though. However, if the gun was in an inside pocket, it would make sense.

Exactly. The pocket works like a cross-draw.

I understand the cross-draw thing and the reason he was reaching across his body, but I don't get why, he'd reach across his body twice, in opposite directions, when he only had one gun.

Yes, obviously the left-hand reach is perplexing. It could have been as simple as scratching his right arm-pit.

It's kind of after-the-fact even, his reaching across his body with the right hand. It only makes sense once they found the gun. Maybe he was just scratching his body that time, too.

I guess we'll never know. All we know is that he was the erratic one, he was running, and he ended up with a gun in the correct pocket (to fit their theory).
