Syrian refugees (in hi-vis vests) help local residents fill and distribute sandbags in Littleborough, Greater Manchester.

Four days after the worst floods anyone in Rochdale can remember, the town was gearing up for the next torrent after forecasters predicted yet more heavy rain. Everyone was playing their part. A group of Syrian refugees from Manchester had even pitched up ready to help, and were put to work shovelling sand into sandbags, in the car park of the Conservative club in Littleborough.

“We saw the pictures on TV and wanted to help,” said Yasser al-Jassem, 35, a teacher who came to Britain in the back of a lorry from Calais in May. “The people of Greater Manchester have been very good to us and so we wanted to offer our help to them.”

Well done these guys for at least making the effort. For all the bad press the refugees have been getting it's fitting that this gets some coverage to strike some balance. What should be seen as a good deed should be recognised as such instead of the negative messages about them that I see on here.

I'm just wondering who told the press. I suppose the press have been in the area and could have just asked them for their story.

In any case, I don't see the point of singling anyone out for helping - it just creates another divide IMO.

That they just so happened to come across some refugees helping.
I see it for what it is a publicity stunt by the Guardian which seems to show no level of gratitute to the countless other people helping out in these natural disasters which I find disgusting to be honest.

Actually, the main article was in The Huff Post. Was in most of the other papers as well, including the Mail I believe.

Absurd logic, if one prints the story, then many others usually go off the back of the one who has printed the story.
So again what is appalling is that what media time has been given to many others who have done far more than fill in some sand bags

At no point did I call them scroungers.
You see in your deserpation and hatred of me, this is all you can do and yes filling in some sand bags is the least they can do, not something I would shout home about when many people are already helping.
