Teenager falsely claimed she was raped twice to get second shot at exams and win university place
A young woman who caused police to spend hundreds of hours investigating false claims that she had been twice raped in a park has been jailed for two years. Naima Shereen Mirza, 21, was "lost in lies" when she "spun a web of deceit" by making up that she had been hauled into bushes and attacked by the same man in incidents five months apart when she was 17. She later told detectives she concocted the attacks to explain her poor exam results after failing to get an A in chemistry that she required to take up an offer to read forensic biology at Strathclyde University.
Mirza thought it was her "only option" to enable her to do an extra year at school, in Edinburgh, to improve her exam results.
Sheriff Michael O'Grady QC told Mirza: "In many years in these courts in one capacity or another, I have come across the whole range of hateful, hideous and downright bizarre things that people do to each other and the world at large. "But I doubt, however, in all that time that I have encountered a course of conduct so strange, so needless and so hard to fathom as yours." He added: "It is also a course of conduct that is selfish, devious and persistent to a truly remarkable degree." Mirza had denied that on various occasions between May 15, 2012 and April 2, 2013, she falsely represented to police officers and civilian operators at the 999 service she had been sexually assaulted and raped in the King George V Park in Edinburgh. But the jury of 12 women and three men found Mirza - who was referred to in court as Shereen - guilty after a nine-day trial earlier this month.

That is totally bizarre. It's a good job she didn't actually name a specific man, otherwise his life would be in ruins by now.

Women who lie about rape and name a specific man should be given the same sentence the rapist would have been given.
This woman sounds mentally ill, surely no one could make such stories up, keep adding to them, and carry it on for so long if they didn't suffer from some mental illness.

I hate to hear stories like this, particularly because some people use them to act as though women often lie about being raped, when too often they don't say anything when they have been.

Especially date rape when a lot of women feel guilty.
That's why women who do lie should be punished, it can often be a grey area because often it's her word against his (if a specific man is named) but a false rape allegation can ruin lives just as much as a rape can.

Totally what i thought too. It really is a sickening thing to do and could stop women from potentially coming forward when they've been raped or sexually assaulted.
