Heartwarming story of how store staff treated homeless man stealing food from shelves
Workers at the Sheffield Tesco gave the hungry ex-soldier a roast turkey dinner and clothes – and have resolved to help other people on the streets
When staff at a supermarket found a homeless ex-soldier stealing food from their shelves, they didn’t call the police.
Instead, they provided the hungry man with tea, a roast turkey dinner, cake and clothing and listened to how he came to be living on the streets.
His story inspired staff at Tesco in at Burngreave, Sheffield, to do more to help the homeless men and women in the city.
So they took to the streets of the city centre to hand out food and hot drinks to the homeless sleeping rough.
Said Rachel Liszka, the store’s community champion, said: “We have recently noticed the rise in homeless people in Sheffield and decided it is time to help.
Helping hand: Staff at the Burngreave Tesco were moved by the ex-soldier’s plight
“We had a homeless veteran come into our shop who was caught shoplifting because he was hungry. My colleagues got him a tea and cake and I fetched him a roast turkey dinner from our cafe. He was so grateful he cried.
“Just talking to him was heartbreaking. It was down to circumstances that he had nowhere to live, no food, nothing. I also gave him some clothes from our clothing bank, which staff have been donating clothes to.
“I said to him that if he is hungry again then to come in and see us. We would much rather help him than get him into trouble with the police. Helping him has truly inspired my colleagues to go that extra mile.
Armed with a van full of food, a team of volunteers walked the streets of the city centre to hand out items from the store to the homeless. They now plan to make their good deed a regular event.
Added Rachel said: “We had crisps, bread from our bakery, pancakes, croissants, apples, bananas and oranges. One of our supervisors had bought some sandwiches out of his own money and we gave those out with tea and coffee.
Getty
In need: Workers at the store are now helping the city’s other homeless
“One lady we met had a dairy intolerance and so I went into the Tesco store nearby and they sorted her with a hot drink and I bought her a magazine.
“The people we met are so lovely and so nice. Often people turn their noses up at them and call them drunks and drug addicts, but they haven’t brought it on themselves. More often than not it’s the circumstances and it cannot be helped.
“We would like to encourage everyone to not just walk past a homeless person, but to give them a tea or coffee, a sandwich or a blanket. As a city we should get together and share what we can afford to.
“If nothing else, a smile and a hello rather than a scowl and a tut.”

Brilliant that they have done this, but a terrible indictment of our society that the problem has reached such massive proportions in one of the richest countries in the world.

I hope they paid for all that stuff, otherwise they'll be charged with shoplifting too.

I don't really carry blankets with me tbh.

I doubt it actually. I think a lot of homeless people have issues other than a lack of money.

And because they have those issues they end up broke, which is why they then have to deal with homelessness which makes the issues worse.

It's absurd that staff at Tesco need to do this at all. Why isn't the Government employing staff to check out all the homeless people?

nice word that........... "issues"
the mask which is used to justify injustice
IF they have "issues" shouldnt we as a society, be attending to those issues, regardless...

Somehow that point gets lost. I'm sure they have a lot of issues besides homelessness, and society should be trying to help all of those issues.

Why not the government AND Tesco AND other big businesses AND ordinary citizens AND charity organizations?

It should, but it shouldn't make them worse by making them live on the street, which is what the policies of this government does when people have 'issues'.

Because the government doesn't give a fuck and are causing the problem, Tesco is trying to be nice in this case, big business aren't paying their taxes so are another cause, ordinary citizens are desperately trying and charities are overrun and having their voices stopped by this government.

Well it's easy enough to give someone some money for a cup of tea and a sarnie - if they use it for that of course. It's all a bit fleeting though isn't it? There needs to be a proper plan for dealing with this kind of situation.

In other words, it needs to be a real priority, and on that I completely agree. I just don't see why many entities couldn't band together to fix it. That would also lessen the burden on each of them.

pffft
it is (or rather should be) the inalienable right of EVERY man woman and child in rich western countries
to a roof over their head, food in their bellies and clothes on their back
it should be up there with the right to life, the right of education, the right to health care and sailing clear above the right to nonsense like religion
no-one should suffer the misery and health consequences of not having those vital things
IF corbyn was anything of a left leader (and he isnt) he would be up there making this very statement AND SAYING HOW he will do it. He would also be making it clear that if you disagreed then you are part of te problem ...not the solution and that your objections are founded on nothing but sheer greed and malice
(he would also be promising NOT to make the situation worse ...by placing a moratorium on immigration for several years )
between a greedy and incompetatnt r/w (tory)
and a weak sniveling excuse of a l/w
sadly we are stuffed.

Congrats, you just agreed with both the greatest and most left-wing president in U.S. history -- Franklin D. Roosevelt:
The Second Bill of Rights is a list of rights that was proposed by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his State of the Union Address on January 11, 1944.[1] In his address Roosevelt suggested that the nation had come to recognize, and should now implement, a second "bill of rights". Roosevelt's argument was that the "political rights" guaranteed by the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights had "proved inadequate to assure us equality in the pursuit of happiness." Roosevelt's remedy was to declare an "economic bill of rights" which would guarantee eight specific rights:
Employment (right to work)
Food, clothing and leisure
Farmers' rights to a fair income
Freedom from unfair competition and monopolies
Housing
Medical care
Social security
Education
Roosevelt stated that having these rights would guarantee American security, and that the United States' place in the world depended upon how far these and similar rights had been carried into practice.

yeah yeah...but note i also want a moratorium on immigration....so we can catch up with the mess we are in so far...
I would even have an amnesty for those who are here illegally for 6 months...after which they (any that didnt repond to the amnesty) would be hunted down and forcibly if necessary expelled
those who responded to the amnesty would be guaranteed a place here subject to behaving

I'm getting pretty tired of your "know it all" attitude. All you ever do is blame the Government and their policies for everything, and then get arsy or patronising with anyone who doesn't kow-tow to you.
Do you really think that someone just suddenly finds themselves homeless with no build up to it? Of course they don't. Often, the downward spiral starts much earlier than that because of personal problems, and they simply lose the will to do anything about their problems. They don't ask for help, or they don't know who to ask, or how to ask.
Open your eyes, and stop being so narrow minded.

Re: Heartwarming story of how store staff treated homeless man stealing food from shelves
You see, we have a story here about an ex soldier who was nicking stuff from a supermarket, and the staff helped him temporarily.
The question is - why was he homeless in the first place? The fact that he's an ex soldier might be a clue, but there are no details about that, so we don't know. We don't know if he was suffering from some kind of emotional issues or PTSD.
The staff gave him a meal, but they can't sort out his personal issues for him can they? They can hand out sandwiches to all the homeless people they find so the homeless person isn't hungry for a few hours, but what happens after that? What happens when those staff are too "busy" with their own lives to do this for very long?
What does a member of the public do if they see a homeless person? They could stop and chat for a while, they could give them some money or go and buy them a sandwich, but are they going to know where the nearest homeless shelter is? Even if they do, are they going to insist that person goes with them and gets somewhere to stay at least for the night? They could tell them where the nearest citizens's advice bureau is so they can get some advice, but what if the homeless person doesn't go there, or what if they don't want to?
It's all very well just saying it's the Government's fault, but there are a lot of other issues involved.

In fact, I'm wondering if this thread is really thinly-veiled attempt by Sassy to excuse shoplifting generally on the grounds that the big retailers can afford to turn a blind eye.

I was listening to a debate recently about the homeless people living on the streets in Manchester.
There are few places for them to find a bed for the night....and often they have to be referred, which makes it even more difficult.
Many of the homeless are ex soldiers, and the bedroom tax didn't help them either....in some cases they had nowhere to go back home to.
It also makes me laugh when people say no one need use a foodbank....some people in this rich comfortable country of ours are starving and cold.......I agree it's a national disgrace.

now see stormee...this is why R/E of your ilk are useless
all rhetoric and hot air
and nasty with it
there would be plenty......by the time I'd make starbucks, face book and all the rest pay their proper share , and I'd closed all the "loopholes" where the 1% squirel away their ill gotten gains out of sight of the tax man
those already here, illegal or not are here and as such deserve to be treated properly.
far better to get them "on the books" so to speak

If there aren't enough houses for British homeless people, or money to help them, then there aren't enough for people from other countries either. Sort out the British people first. If they're homeless for other reasons, that's different, and it may well be the case.

Re: Heartwarming story of how store staff treated homeless man stealing food from shelves
theres plenty of housing..
1 rent control
2 confiscate under a use it or lose it policy any unoccuopied suitable buildings
3 reward councils for building new council housing
4 compulsary purchase all "second homes" NO-ONE needs two homes
5 no homes to be owned by foreign investors/speculators
6 no homes to be owned by anyone spending more than 6 months per year abroad and claiming non dom status
also as the labour paper sassy posted a link to...confiscate under a use it or lose it policy any suitable brownfield land and get homes built on it.

we should actually, have a small surplus of available housing
so that problems such as are raised about "sudenly finding" housing for the syrian refugees would not be an issue

I'm talking about now - how come there are always homes for people from other countries, but we have homeless British people here? Are the homeless people not asking for somewhere to live or what?

ah right , well as i have said times,,,THAT is MY biggest (but not sole) problem with entertaining these refugees...I do beleive I have said "when all our needy are sorted then we can look to this matter" or some such
though the immediate implementation of some of those policies would have an immediate effect
like confiscating unused "investment" properties and second homes
