Shot dead for askign someone to put out their smoke
http://www.news.com.au/world/waitress-shot-dead-by-restaurant-customer-she-asked-to-stop-smoking/news-story/e492b110ef3382ed4d392bdbe6c10f5b
A RESTAURANT waitress died when shot in the head after asking a customer to put out his cigarette.
Johnny Mount pulled a 9mm pistol from his shirt and shot 52-year-old mother of two Julie Brightwell who worked at a smoke-free Waffle House in the coastal city of Biloxi in Mississippi.
Mount, 45, a former fireman, had lit a cigarette when Brightwell, who had worked at the restaurant for eight years, went over and told him to put it out about 1am Friday.
“I just don’t understand why somebody would be so upset over a cigarette,” Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said. “Some stuff like this just defeats logic.”
Customer Richard Bonin told the SunHerald that Brightwell had served him and his two friends just before she was shot.
“I was just in shock when I found out,” he said. “It gave me the chills. It’s just a weird feeling to think we might have been her last customers.”
Bonin said the Waffle House where Brightwell work was “my favourite.”
“She was so friendly,” he said. “She sat down and talked to us. It wasn’t too busy then, just a few more people in booths.”

And some people still defend that people have the right to carry guns.
Shocking incident and time to stop the madness.

Yep.
Laws are not for the sane person but the outlying.
Would any amount of other guns stopped it NO. cause life is not a movie the bad guys wont stop and let you pull out your gun you are shot before you even knew there was going to be guns

That's just awful. The guy still sat there afterwards. I wonder if he couldn't believe what he'd just done. His friend said he was a good person and that perhaps something just snapped. That's the problem with allowing people to carry guns around - they get in a temper and in a split second they've taken someone's life and wrecked their own life.

According to this article, he pulled out the gun and Julie hid behind the counter. He leaned over the counter and shot her. Then he went outside and put the gun on top of a vehicle, and walked back in and went to the toilets.
Also according to this article, Mount had lost a limb and suffered brain injury when he was struck by a vehicle in 2002.
If he was carrying that gun legally, who decided he was fit to have one if he'd had a brain injury?

This is just horrendous! A woman doing her job and asking another human to comply by the law of the land - putting out a cigarette?!
This does further strengthen the "ban guns" argument further.

Yes, although I'm not sure it was a law that he couldn't smoke in there.

I thought smoking had been banned in public places, across America?

There are numerous facets of this matter: smoking, guns, etc. But the first one to notice is that it happened in the American south...Biloxi, Mississippi. This is the axis of evil in the US, and these are the people who's stories make your eyes pop.
Mississippi has not yet, to my knowledge, enacted a statewide ban on smoking in public restaurants. The state leaves it up to local governments.
Nearby Gulfport bans smoking in restaurants, but not in bars. Biloxi has no bans at all--it's solely at the discretion of the business. The Palace Casino and its restaurants are 100% smoke free.

He was obviously deranged....I don't agree with Americas gun laws but if someone is in that frame of mind and had carried a knife instead of a gun the poor woman would be just as dead.

No, it depends on where you are. I don't think it was banned by law in that restaurant.

Maybe not. It's a lot harder to kill someone with a knife than it is to shoot them. All she would have to do is keep as far away as possible from him, and maybe there would have been time for others to disarm him.

Well we will never know because in America it's a lot easier to get a gun licence than here.....we do have quite a lot of fatal stabbings here though.
It's not that hard to kill someone with a knife if the weapon is sharp enough and the intent is there.

I just gave you the law in Mississippi. There is no statewide ban, and the State leaves it up the the local government and private businesses. Biloxi has no ordinance prohibiting smoking and leaves it up the the individual business.
Guns play into the psyche in ways that knives do not. Guns fire projectiles , and position the shooter remotely from the victim. It's quick and surprisingly clean, whereas knives require you to get right in there with the murder victim and mix it up with the blood and guts. Big difference to the shooter.

Yes, that's what I think too - you do stand more of a chance if someone is out to get with a knife.
Here in England we have a blanket ban on smoking in public buildings, including bars, restaurants, and cafes. It was a bit weird at first but now it would seem weird to see someone smoking in such a place.

That is the law in California as well.

Have to disagree. unarmed people can resist a knife a lot easier than a gun
Yes you can kill someone with just about anything, but besides bombs nothing kills as easily as a gun.. that's why the Army uses them

Totally agree.
With a knife you stand a better chance of getting away - a bullet is just too fast.
