Update-Bloody Sunday: Paras 'betrayed' over arrest of former soldier
Veterans, MPs and former military commanders demand to know why former soldiers are being investigated for murder when so many former terrorists were released under the Good Friday Agreemen.
Paratroopers who opened fire on rioters on Bloody Sunday feel “betrayed” after a former soldier was held on suspicion of murder and police warned of more arrests to follow. The 66-year-old ex-Lance Corporal became the first member of the British armed forces to be arrested by detectives investigating the deaths of 14 men at a protest march in Londonderry in 1972. He was being questioned by Northern Ireland police’s Legacy Investigation branch at a Belfast police station over the fatal shootings of three men and the attempted murder of a fourth during a disturbance that followed the march.
Families of some of those who died in one of the most notorious episodes of the Troubles welcomed what they described as a positive step towards justice, but one of the architects of the peace process warned of the “perils” of dredging up the past.Lord Mandelson, the former Northern Ireland secretary, said the authorities in the province should “think long and hard about the perhaps unforeseen consequences” of arrests, adding that peace in Ulster was “fragile” and there were dangers in anything that might “fire up tensions between different parts of the community”.Meanwhile MPs and former military commanders demanded to know why former soldiers were being investigated for murder when so many former terrorists were released under the Good Friday Agreement.

The families of those killed may well welcome this step, but did they give a thought for the families of those who were killed by the IRA when their murderers were let out of prison? I doubt it very much.
This should go both ways. If they let murderers and terrorists out of prison, they should drop this as well.

This is going to stir up many problems in the region and can understand why many are angry over this when many terrorists/murderers were released.

Whoever decided this was a good idea will have blood on their hands. There is no greater hypocrisy than this.

Re: Update-Bloody Sunday: Paras 'betrayed' over arrest of former soldier
A murder investigation into the Bloody Sunday killings could be derailed after seven former soldiers began legal action against the police in the High Court.
Solicitors acting for the former paratroopers have applied for a judicial review of the way the Police Service of Northern Ireland is conducting its inquiry following the arrest of a 66-year-old former Lance Corporal on Tuesday.
They claim the murder investigation is being pursued for “political reasons” and have questioned its legality.
It comes as the PSNI warned soldiers they may lose their anonymity if they are charged with murder or other offences, as they will be treated in the same way as any other criminal suspects.

It seems to me that a lot of people want to move on from the troubles in NI, but they only want to move on to protect the IRA scum, they don't want to move on when it comes to anyone else who was involved.

Yes. It does seem that a lot of these scum were known to be IRA, but nobody did a thing about it. Of course, when that lot in Gibralter were killed, there was a huge outcry. I don't know why - they were terrorists.
