Future Classrooms
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-11-06/interactive-classrooms-being-rolled-out-in-nsw/6919252The new technology is being tested at the Department of Education's Futures Learning Unit at Australian Technology Park at Redfern, before it is rolled out to 1,600 classrooms over the next decade. The designs being tested include prototype classrooms where students can write on desks and walls.New digital projectors can cast images onto the floor so students can gather around and control what is on the screen with the flick of an interactive pen.You can't teach the same way using new technology, you've got to use that new technology and you've got to teach differently.
NSW Education Minister Adrian PiccoliWi-fi and connective software means devices in the room, including tablets and laptops, can interact with each other.NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli said the way children learn was evolving as times changed."What children are using at home with their friends and what they're seeing online has got to be reflected in what happens in the classrooms, otherwise schools are going to be left behind," Mr Piccoli said."I had a student who said to me before, 'this is much better than learning', when indeed learning is exactly what he was doing."Mr Piccoli said there would be some critics of the flexible classrooms, which have beanbags and light-weight furniture that can be moved around instead of traditional chairs and desks. However, he said it meant children were more engaged with what they were learning."If a little boy is reading on a bean bag, that is great for the child — the fact that they are reading — irrespective of where they might be reading."You can't teach the same way using new technology, you've got to use that new technology and you've got to teach differently," Mr Piccoli said.

Re: Future Classrooms
great idea veya.....i applaud that one...
BUT they have still got to get away from the barmy idea of "mixed ability" teaching...
which only results in the 5% of Z steam capable kids getting 80% of the teachers attention, 2% of gifted A stearmers getting 15% and the rest being screwed over with only 5%

Re: Future Classrooms
we have got past that and that is part of the point of the 'smart tech' to allow individual paced learning. it is more focused on 'not slowing the fast ones down' .
the Human teacher still basically goes at the pace of the slowest (but we do have special classes for both gifted and slow kids) but any kid with a a desire to go faster can with their device. really good for keeping little ones engaged. and by the time you get to high school they can basically be an entire year pasted their traditional school year in their 'strong' subjects.
some of the Applications are amazing, particularly the science ones they a start off for 12 year old, but end up at to near university level.
I think these new method will definitely allow kids to learn more but there is still issues around how you do exams etc when you have are more dynamic curriculum. but hey if there was no challenges it probably wouldn't be worth doing

skynet disagrees
Uk style left wing is dead/old here. that had a small run in the early 2000's, failure so gone...
we are past that, new Left wing is about making it universal roll out, Right wing is parental payment (meaning that poor school wont get it moving toward a US style funding model)
both are moving toward technological based education because of the general success of the digital education revolution (DER)
so really it is a good period for Aussie education as both sides agree on the way forward and it is just the normal LW/RW economic divide (state funded versus user pays)

It's not all bad Victor. Corbyn's election has resulted in a large increase in people's interest in politics...........I for one will be making sure my vote isn't wasted ever again. The thought that he might get elected, however remote I can see a large increase in voters ensuring it doesn't happen, that's if he makes it to the next General Election, the party seems to have pressed the self destruct button.

well previously you put paper oR book there ... it means straight onto the desk
we got some in the office, they are cool they are basically covered in a whiteboard like paint
and the real new ones are touch screen tables but even i think they are a little bit cost prohibitive at this stage

Expensive gimmick... its not about flashy lights and click buttons... its about the actual knowledge and understanding of core subjects that is important.
Kids need to be taught how to do things,.how to make things and how things actually work... not how to copy and paste shit off the internet or how to drag and drop icons on a screen...

so they years is already 2015, this is a real photo
Only a matter of time before this become the primary way to make things.. better learn how to the use the machines that let you interface with the tools you will need in the future..
And you still thinking the teacher is leading the room, they are not the computer is, it knows vastly more than the best individual teacher, and is already equal in capacity of actually teaching. only a matter of years before they are better teachers than any human teachers. The human teachers become facilitators of learning not fountains of knowledge
Or of course you could teach them how to survive in yesteryear with king Aurthur and robin hood

Re: Future Classrooms
A computer on it's own knows nothing and won't even switch on without a human plugging it in... and then won't have any electricity without a human providing it...
The 'technology' you show has created a lump of plastic shit that is of no use to anyone at enormous cost...
I would rather see a class of kids own designs with plastercine or clay any day!
Kids need teaching basic core subjects first, to be able to read and write and have numericy skills, then to start to learn about other related core subjects like chemistry and physics, biology and geography, about nature, farming and industry etc... how things grow and how things work, where things come from and how they are manufactured and designed etc...
Any idiot can see a flashy light and click a button...

Re: Future Classrooms
it's not the 90's Computer are much more capable than a human
the computer can teach them all the core subject much faster and it teaches them one to one so it goes at the pace they need.
Yep and printing Useless lumps Like Prosthetic limbs
And cheap as shit
for less than 3 grand per student can give them the equivalent of a personal tutor that woudl be 10,000's per year
And in design, tech and engineering it is invaluable
as i am sure Vic can confirm inspiring kids to think about how things are built and how it can be done better is the corner stone of Engineering

So is that what you do?
and how does clicking a flashing light give you a 3d image file... the exact same format as Victor currently uses in his CC router, as do almost all people that BUILD STUFF.
You seem to think people still use hand tools. Computers already do the majority of the work but you still need to tell them what work to do.
This teaches kids from a young age how to do that so rather than scribbles on grid paper, they make 3d models of their ideas.
And clearly the fact we are so much more successful that the UK after implementing 21st century education shows that it works. Australia is Literally number one since 2013.... so Don't change stick to the old stuff and slip further behind like everything else in life Tommy.

Re: Future Classrooms
quite veya...however ...what to do if and when the tech fails....
despite having a state of the art cnc router and a variety of other wonderousmachines I can STILL build you a home from the ground up with nothing more than 2 axes and a maul.....
or a baby's crib
or a set of cupboards...
no saws...no nails no palners nothing but 2 axes and a maul....
and that includes no paper or pencil too....calculating stresses and what size timber to use from the knowleged in my head, not only the maths but the various tensile strengths of timbers etc
what failure modes to guard against...and how...
joints that dont need nails...or glue
I could fell you a tree and turn it into planks or 2x2 s or whatever without machines....

Re: Future Classrooms
Also to add
Every book you ever read on how to do it is online too
combined with video it is better than a what was there before But for true Professional level yes you still want to do an apprenticeship or go to tertiary education.
Like i said the real point is for the kid that wants to know more, it doesn't stop with what is printed on the page they can click and get more and follow the 'rabbit hole' of learning.

Oui Sunshine, what about me, I can grow and kill (if necessary) my own food and probably cook it as well as you! And I've cast metal and worked with wood, and I could make pots from clay to eat out of.

Chisel, Plane, saw, axe and mallet
how hard is it
(my little brother, cabinet maker by trade, inherited our great great grandfathers hand tools all made in the 1800's )
Let alone i could build a steam engine and make electricity from that.
otherwise easy enough to re purpose an old engine block, just need something to spin the coil, got a decent water flow and we can set up a hydo electric generator
I have a green thumb and pretty good a skinning things. Let alone i eat anything french blood... even snails aren't safe
BUT I wouldn't need to follow you anyway. I can almost guarantee my 'bush skills' are more developed than most Brits. they are decent even by Aussie standards with the trees down here i can make basic liquid fuel, antiseptics, cough syrup and hallucinogens.
with important plants too (that of grow here) I can make a whole range of medicinal herbal teas.
Experienced horse rider (number one reason for buying the country place was to be able to ride often again the place i used to as kid got sold off and made into housing about 15 years ago)
been fire twirling since i was 20 which translates into pretty extreme spear and staff skills.
ohh and something my friends joke about in apocalyptic survival tactics.. the Chillis i grow, bhut jolokia, are literally chemical weapon fuel, super soaker full of chili juice that can make skin blister

That stuff in the OP looks really good Veya and it surely engages the pupils much better in working with arithmetic.
Anything that gets them intersted can't be a bad thing and new technology like that is just the job.
Definately looks good to me.

YOU will starve
me however ...i will make a fortune
folks will want things made
I can work wood
metal
even plastics ...if there are any
AND be able to find kill prepare and cook food
even grow food
without the need for "tech"
what will YOU do....
i wouldnt want you along, you would be no use to me under those circumstances...
except perhaps as a sacrificial grunt (or bait maybe?)
Tommy would make a useful slave...he could earn his keep....
sadly for you even shady would be more useful
along with big andy and
smelly
I might even consider didge...if he would promise to stop having more rattle than a tin of dried peas......
what could YOU offer......
Chisel, Plane, saw, axe and mallet
how hard is it
harder than you think
(my little brother, cabinet maker by trade, inherited our great great grandfathers hand tools all made in the 1800's )
Let alone i could build a steam engine and make electricity from that.
otherwise easy enough to re purpose an old engine block, just need something to spin the coil, got a decent water flow and we can set up a hydo electric generator
oh for gods sake wheres ya brians man?? just get a diesel enging and hand crank it....hold the fuel cut off valve open mechanically and away it goes
could you wind the coils....properly? make the varnish to insulate them?bear in mind you might even have to make the wire...a sufficiently bad solar storm would reduce any length of wire to a molten heap...
and ...just what...would you do with this electricity stuff you made???
All your tech is smoking heaps of junk....
even light bulbs are burnt out.....
so?
at least initially doing that would be a waste of time and resources......
I have a green thumb and pretty good a skinning things. Let alone i eat anything french blood... even snails aren't safe
that is a trait we share...even YOU wouldnt be safe
BUT I wouldn't need to follow you anyway. I can almost guarantee my 'bush skills' are more developed than most Brits. they are decent even by Aussie standards with the trees down here i can make basic liquid fuel, antiseptics, cough syrup and hallucinogens.
with important plants too (that of grow here) I can make a whole range of medicinal herbal teas.
Experienced horse rider (number one reason for buying the country place was to be able to ride often again the place i used to as kid got sold off and made into housing about 15 years ago)
yup I too ride...not that i particularly like the idea of a mode of transport with a mind of its own......( i also hate supermarket trolleys)
been fire twirling since i was 20 which translates into pretty extreme spear and staff skills.
I'm more a bow man myself...along with broadsword and dagger...
ohh and something my friends joke about in apocalyptic survival tactics.. the Chillis i grow, bhut jolokia, are literally chemical weapon fuel, super soaker full of chili juice that can make skin blister

Anything that gets them intersted can't be a bad thing and new technology like that is just the job.
Definately looks good to me.
Good back to the OP.
yep that is right like the minister said the important thing is they are reading, what they read on what they sit on is less important than just encouraging them to read.

Get them loving reading and they can find out anything. As Einstein said 'I have no special talent, I am just passionately curious'

come on ...we can cope....
meanwhile you would have resources for 50 but500 to feed
whereas I would have resources for 50 and only 10 to feed....
Yep, but my waifs and strays would be taught what to do and all pull together, because they would have known what hard times were like.
More people, more foragers.
yeah, but you would never get owt done, you would all be sat around arguning the whichness of why
and you would be bogged down with moral crisis,,
