I'm glad you are getting my sense of humour more so these days Zack, but on a serious note... I repeat... it is the mass influx of people that is causing there to be a shortage in many areas as the systems simply cannot cope with such a continually huge rise in demand every year...!

As you know, the NHS and nursing is part of my livelihood.

The truth is that right now hospitals and nursing homes are becoming bankrupt (not an exaggeration) because there is a shortage of nurses and an over reliance on agency staff. I've had employment agencies knock me back for the last year because they were preoccupied with recruiting for the NHS. And even then there was a shortage.

The irony is that the Tories would prefer immigrants who were ballet dancers rather than nurses.

Linking administrative records from the Hospital Episode Statistics (2003-2012) with immigration data drawn from the UK Labor Force Survey, we analyze how immigrant inflows affected waiting times in the National Health Service. We find that immigration reduced waiting times for outpatient referrals and did not have significant effects on waiting times in Accident and Emergency (A&E) and elective care. However, there is evidence that immigration increased waiting times for outpatient referrals in more deprived areas outside London. These effects are concentrated in the years immediately following the 2004 EU enlargement and vanish in the medium-run (e.g., 3 to 4 years). Our findings suggest that these regional disparities are explained by both differences in the health status of immigrants moving into different local authorities and in natives’ internal mobility across local authorities.

As you can see, the picture is not black or white. But on the whole and for right now, we need nurses while our home grown nurses are trained.

I think we should have rules to set limits on how long they can stay while we train our own and how many we let in - this is just common sense. Nobody is for uncontrolled immigration. Even the lefties. Although I admit the lefties like immigrants as they increase their voting base.

As for you Tom and people with your views, I think the lefties are making are critical error in judgement by trying to squash your opinion. Then the shortages are being used as argument for allowing even more immigration!!!
