Racist?
17th December 2013
The most complained about TV show of the year was a Big Brother episode in which Jemima said "I go for darker looking, not black, but darker feature, Mediterranean. I wouldn't generally go for a black guy," Jemima said. "I like darker guys, but not black guys. Wouldn't really go for Chinese. I like mixed race."
She was then dragged in for a talking to by the producers who said her comments were racist.
Viewers complained that she was being abused by the producers.
Are the viewers correct?
Please discuss.

I quite like the show sassy.
But anyway, what about the wider social issues which you are probably more interested in?
I'm sure Big Brother is just a reflection of British life - is what Jemima said ok? Anything else you'd like to bring in to the conversation?

Why would Big Brother be a reflection on British life? They pick loonies to hole up together and wait for the sparks to fly. On a par with Jeremy Kyle.

I don't know about BB but I don't think that is racist, it is just personal Preference

And, i'm afraid sassy, that Jeremy Kyle shows 5 - 10 million adults and their families who don't work for what they are and what their children will be.

Agreed veya, but it does show just what kind of country Britain has turned in to when organisations are so scared of upsetting a minority that they can make innocent people feel like criminals.
It isn't just TV shows - it is public organisations such as councils, the police and schools.
It's a frightening place to live.

I wouldn't know Andy, I don't know anyone who watches it, or Big Brother lol But do you mean we have 5 - 10 million out of work people in this country, have the Government been lying about the statistics? That would be terrible wouldn't it?

I've forgotten what labour called them all - economically inactive or something. There were 10 million at one point while they were "in charge".

Oh dear, you do realise that includes people who were retired, those mothers that stayed at home to look after their children, those who were rich enough that they didn't need to work, those who were too sick to work etc etc etc. DOH!

It includes those who retired early - not pensioners.
Yes, and the others.
And now we'll get back to the original story.
So, what do you think sassy?

Not having seen it, I don't know if you facts are accurate. Just saying she likes coloured guys isn't racist, so do a lot of women, so maybe she said someone derogatory about white guys, who knows.

Racist? No as someone posted earlier its about preference. We all have one and there is nothing wrong with it. I cant stand Arabs!

Never watched Big Brother. The woman who said this - is she white? If so she must be a racist, if not that's okay.

Re: Racist?
This is funny -- it's actually completely logical from a biological perspective that some people would have a stronger preference for partners of a different skin tone. It's the same cause as the incest taboo -- evolution favors genetically diverse individuals, and finding a mate from a different gene pool as your own is more likely to produce healthy offspring.
Does it sound tacky to say you don't like to date certain types of people? Sure, it can, but the truth can sound tacky. I'm sure it sounds tacky to some people when I say that I think too many white American women act like their mere existence is a gift to humankind, but that doesn't change the fact that that's how I see it. And I understand that many of them act that way because that's the way they've always been treated, to be fair about it.
At the same time, I wouldn't try to make this Big Brother issue into something it's probably not. I.E., it's probably a case of a few overly sensitive people overreacting, and probably not part of an organized effort to oppress the British people.

Re: Racist?
Ah, I see you're not British Ben, or you certainly don't live in the UK??
And for some reason you try and brush the point aside in your final sentence.
Why is that I wonder?
Because there is a political party in the UK - and many organisations which have grown over the past couple of years just because of that point, yet you, an American, for some reason just brush it aside.

I completely fail to see how that is racist! I hate this type of thing, it actually makes something seem more racist than it ever was.
I bet, not ONE black person found that racist.

It isn't racist and anyway there's more to a person than just skin colour or nationality. I've seen natural beauty in people from all walks of life in many countries.

Sometimes it's often the way I. Which things are said, not only what is said..
But I would not describe that as racist sounding Andy.

Not British, don't live in the U.K. -- I'm from Texas. I don't think I brushed aside anything in my final sentence, other than to discount the existence of a coordinated effort to make British people live in fear of uttering something that someone might construe as racist.
Do you think there's a coordinated effort in Britain to make people afraid of saying anything that might sound racist?
Also, I think these days, everything that happens is basically a reaction to something else. If there are people cracking down, misguidedly or not, on racist statements, I don't think the idea came to them out of the blue. Do you?

Many people on the far right bemoaned the day when laws were brought in to protect the minorities from abuse and harassment as it denied them of their 'sport'
The only ones that would be scared about what they are saying are the racists themselves because the vast majority of the British public wouldn't be using that sort of language, that would need to be thought about.
It's all just sour grapes IMO....Just like the dinosaurs they will all be extinct one day as the majority of the youth don't share their opinions at all so best to let them scream and shout and laugh in their face because there is nothing that they can do about progression

On the OP no it isn't racist- just preference as many have said; you either are physically attracted to people of a particular ethnicity, or you aren't, simple as that.
However I am fascinated as to where 5-10 million economically inactive adults comes from! Unless you do include pensioners I've never seen such a huge number throw up before; and not just that, but there is a pretty enormous difference between 5,000,000 and 10,000,000
