Sugar Can Destroy Lives & Should Be Taxed Like Tobacco Says Jamie Oliver
England’s celebrity chef Jamie Oliver says that sugar is the next tobacco and as such it should be taxed because of its health risks.
The Telegraph reports: Sugary foods risk causing a public health crisis similar to smoking and should be taxed in the same way as tobacco, Jamie Oliver has said.
The television chef said sugar was “definitely the next evil” and should be targeted because of the burden it was placing on the NHS.
He said he agreed with France’s decision to impose a tax on sugary drinks and believes Britain should follow.
The 39-year-old campaigner also disclosed that he had found himself on the verge of burning out from exhaustion last year, while balancing his empire of restaurants and television career.
His comments on the risks of sugar following warnings from health campaign groups that sugary diets are one of the main factors in increasing levels of obesity and type-2 diabetes.

Ive long been saying this. But to make sure you don't eat any, or very little, doesn't just mean cutting out desserts and sweat treats only. Sugar is hidden in so many of our foods!
What can be done?

Oh no, not Jamie Oliver again. Perhaps he should attend to his own health instead of worrying about everyone else.

Jamie Oliver (peace be upon him) is trying to save lives of this and future generations. Listen to his message before judging it.

Has anyone told Jamie Oliver that "burn out" is associated with stress, which leads to a lot of disease in this country? Maybe he should look at his own lifestyle.

He probably has?
What's that got to do with him being right about how evil sugar is and suggesting we tax it?

Re: Sugar Can Destroy Lives & Should Be Taxed Like Tobacco Says Jamie Oliver
Well it's a pity that it was Jamie Oliver who said this because it is an interesting subject.
So then, the article mentions obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The obesity is no mystery - sugar contains a lot of calories. You eat too many calories, you get fat.
The diabetes is more interesting. Is there any evidence that eating a lot of sugar can lead to diabetes, or is there evidence that being overweight can lead to diabetes? One could eat a lot of sugar and not become overweight of course, so is it the sugar per se which is the problem, or the usual resulting fat gain?

Re: Sugar Can Destroy Lives & Should Be Taxed Like Tobacco Says Jamie Oliver
CAN EATING TOO MUCH SUGAR CAUSE DIABETES?
You know that diabetes is linked to high blood sugar, but can sugar alone give you the disease? Find out about the relationship between diet and diabetes.
Because type 2 diabetes is linked to high levels of sugar in the blood, it may seem logical to assume that eating too much sugar is the cause of the disease. But of course, it’s not that simple.
Studies do show that sweetened foods can up diabetes risk, but sugar alone isn’t necessarily enough to cause the disease on its own. With more than 20 million Americans living with diabetes and millions more at a high risk for the disease, understand how sugar affects diabetes, as well as other risk factors, is essential to reversing the diabetes epidemic.
The Sugar Story: Not So Sweet
component of many fresh foods, such as the lactose in milk and the fructose in fruits. A healthy, well-balanced diet will always have these sugars in it.
However, the problem with sugar is the sheer amount of it that’s in the typical American diet. Added sugars — the sucrose in table sugar as well as the sugars in foods such as sodas, cereals, packaged foods, and snacks — when consumed in excess, cause weight gain, heart disease, mood swings, and more.
Research has found that a high-sugar diet certainly increases diabetes risk — adding just one serving of a sweetened beverage each day to your diet ups risk by 15 percent, a study at the Harvard School of Public Health found — but calories that come from both carbohydrates and fats also contribute to the development of diabetes.
One particular type of sugar that has attracted a lot of negative attention is high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Because it’s a relatively cheap ingredient, it’s become the most commonly used sweetener in processed foods. Like table sugar, HFCS causes blood-sugar spikes and contributes to weight gain.
Although HFCS has been vilified for decades, researchers are now finding that added sweeteners of all kinds affect the body similarly — and all are bad. In one recent study, scientists found that drinking three sweetened drinks a day for 10 weeks resulted in a nearly 4-pound weight gain and nearly an extra inch to the waistline, regardless of whether the sweetener was fructose or glucose. Even worse, consuming these sweeteners, and fructose in particular, led to decreased insulin sensitivity and higher blood sugar levels, the hallmark predictors of diabetes.

Re: Sugar Can Destroy Lives & Should Be Taxed Like Tobacco Says Jamie Oliver
Thanks for the link eddie.
This is one area where scientists and doctors still aren't sure. I think that most people who get type 2 diabetes are overweight, but that doesn't necessarily mean a causal link, it might be that what they ate to make them overweight is the issue.
On the other hand, many doctors and experts do say that losing the weight will improve the diabetes or even completely control it. Again, is that because it's the body fat which is the issue, or is that people who lose weight tend to cut out sugar in order to do so?
They need more complex studies really, but the likelihood of finding enough people who eat loads of sugar and stay slim is fairly low.
Type 2 diabetes generally starts with insulin resistance whereby the pancreas is producing plenty of insulin but it is ineffective and the cells are resistant to it. They produce more and insulin as a result - at first anyway. This is the key to the problem - why do cells become resistant to insulin?

It is eddie, it's very interesting.
The role of exercise or activity is also interesting. Does lack of exercise play a direct role, or does it merely help to lead to the weight gain which some experts think is the key to insulin resistance or diabetes?

Not sure but exercise is never a bad thing. Ever.
I think it's a good idea for parents to make sure their kids see them exercise as a way of life.

when he opened down here everyone stopped buying his stuff because we realized how bad his food was as opposed to just seeing it on TV.
half of it is just dodgy Italian fusion, plenty of restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne will do it better for a quarter of the price of Jamie.
to be fair we waited years and it was hyped to all buggery and priced to match... which lead to serious disappointment when the food was only 'meh'

Sugar is still better than stevia, saccharin or aspartame the leading artificial sweeteners
junk food as opposed to real food it the problem, it's strange that the people getting fat have high processed preservative laden food and the ones with fresh cooked organic cakes and bread not so much.

Re: Sugar Can Destroy Lives & Should Be Taxed Like Tobacco Says Jamie Oliver
Why living on a main road could be making you fatter
Living near a main road causes people to gain weight with the risk of obesity doubling for homes that are also under a flight path and near a railway.
Researchers believe that the stress of traffic din may raise stress levels to the point where the body starts laying down more fat because it thinks it is heading for a time for crisis, when food may be scarce.
Normal traffic noise is around 45 decibels, but for every five decibels above that, the average homeowner gains an extra 0.2cm on the waist measurement.
London’s Tottenham Court Road regularly records noise of up to 80 decibels meaning residents could expect to be on average 1.4 cm larger waistlines than if they lived in a quieter location.
And noise levels around Buckingham Palace exceed 75 decibels, suggesting even the Queen may be affected by the problem.
Living under a flight path combined with a road and railway was also found to double the risk of obesity.
“Traffic noise is a common and increasing environmental exposure, primarily due to ongoing urbanisation and growth of the transport sector,” said lead author Dr Andrei Pyko, Karolinska Institute in Sweden
“Road traffic is the dominating source, followed by railway and aircraft noise. Health effects related to traffic noise are widespread and span from annoyance, sleep disturbances and changes in stress hormone levels to adverse effects on the cardiovascular system.
“Our results suggested associations with waist circumference primarily in the age group below 60 years.”
The results suggest that people who are trying to lose weight should consider living in less urbanised environments.
And the findings are particularly worrying because obesity around the waist is one of the most harmful types of fat, and has been linked to diseases like diabetes.
The researchers assessed how much road traffic, rail, and aircraft noise 5075 people between 43 and 66 living in five suburban and rural areas around Stockholm, Sweden, had been exposed to since 1999.
They then completed a detailed questionnaire covering lifestyle, current state of health, levels of psychological distress, insomnia and job strain. They were also asked about environmental noise pollution from road traffic, trains, and planes.
The study found that there was a 0.21 cm increase for every additional 5 decibel increase in noise level. Living under a flight path doubled the rate of obesity.
In Britain, 25 per cent of adults are obese — 12 million people — compared with fewer than 3 per cent in the Seventies. The proportion is predicted to grow to one in three by 2030.
A recent study found that for every 10 decibel increase in road noise, the risk of stroke among over 65s increases by more than a quarter. Researchers at the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Copenhagen believe one in five strokes in urban areas could be due to living in noisy homes.
Researchers at Imperial College also found that hospital admissions for stroke, heart and circulatory disease are higher in areas with high levels of aircraft noise.
Dr Anna Hansell, at the Centre for Environment and Health, Imperial College London, said: "While interesting, this is one of the first studies to look at the link between waist size and traffic noise, so it's definitely too soon to be able to blame your increasing waist-line on traffic noise!
“Also, the size of the reported associations with traffic noise are small. Eating a sensible diet and taking regular exercise remains the best way to help prevent a midriff bulge.
“A number of recently published studies have found associations between transport noise and high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
The research was published in the BMJ journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine.

And:
A team of researchers from the University of Granada in Spain has decoded the link between obesity and the presence of certain pollutants in the environment. According to co-author Juan Pedro Arrebola, individuals with increased level of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the bloodstream were remarkably obese than the individuals with normal levels of POPs. In addition, they were found to have higher levels of triglycerides and cholesterol in the body, a condition that results in the accumulation of excessive fat around the waist. In addition, these factors put the concerned person at risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
The fact that concerns the researchers is that the non-degradable POPs have the tendency to remain in the environment long many years.
"Humans are exposed to POPs mainly through diet. Besides, POPs accumulate gradually in body fat, and this is the reason why the median levels in our study give us an idea of an individual's accumulated exposition over a number of years," said Arrebola, as reported by The Times of India.
The researchers conducted the study among 300 individuals, both men and women, wherein the level of accumulated pollutants in their fatty tissue was analysed. Based on the study results, the researchers claimed that the level of many POPs have a direct link with obesity and the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, irrespective of the gender, age, location and smoking habits of the sample population.
The study has been published in the journal Environmental Pollution.

Scientists recently uncovered a surprising and disturbing fact: Environmental toxins make you fat and can cause diabetes. (1) Inside the body, these chemicals monkey with our ability to balance blood sugar and metabolize cholesterol. Over time, the changes can lead to insulin resistance. This discovery should be headline news, but no one is talking about it. Why? Because there are no drugs to treat it. In the quest to conquer the two biggest epidemics of our time -- diabetes and obesity -- we've got to turn our attention to the heavy burden environmental toxins put on our bodies.

We have no idea how many things affect weight gain.

(1) Inside the body, these chemicals monkey with our ability to balance blood sugar and metabolize cholesterol. Over time, the changes can lead to insulin resistance. This discovery should be headline news, but no one is talking about it. Why? Because there are no drugs to treat it. In the quest to conquer the two biggest epidemics of our time -- diabetes and obesity -- we've got to turn our attention to the heavy burden environmental toxins put on our bodies.

junk food as opposed to real food it the problem, it's strange that the people getting fat have high processed preservative laden food and the ones with fresh cooked organic cakes and bread not so much.
Absolutely agree, would not touch them with a barge pole. I don't have any processed food Veya, make everything from scratch, including my bread, but I still put on weight really easily.
