Move To Cap 'Golden Goodbyes' Triggers Row or ..the L/W's turn in the barrel....again
Six-figure redundancy payouts for public sector workers cannot be justified at a time of spending cuts, a government minister has argued.
Defending plans to introduce a cap, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Greg Hands said it was not right for taxpayers to foot the bill for "golden goodbyes" in the NHS, local authorities and the civil service.
But unions have lambasted the move, arguing it threatened to hit hundreds of thousands of workers faced with losing their jobs as a result of the Government's austerity drive.
Critics are also likely to point out this comes as MPs get a 10% pay hike to £74,000 while public sector workers see their pay capped at 1%.
The war of words came as the Treasury launched a consultation on limiting pay-offs to £95,000 in the public sector.
The Bank of England, regulatory bodies and public sector broadcasters including the BBC, expected to follow suit.
Mr Hands said: "It's not right that highly-paid public sector workers should receive huge taxpayer-funded payouts when they're made redundant.

I'll agree that it should stop, especially as a lot of them seem to become "consultants" shortly afterwards. I don't mean medical consultants by the way.

I thought redundancy pay was only about a weeks pay for every year you had been in the job...!?
And only qualifying for anything at all if you had been in the job for more than a certain time... thought it was 2 years!?

Negotiated from what position of power?
If you Are being made redundant... ie, superfluous to The needs of The company and of no further value etc... why would a company give you any more than obliged to by law...!?
Unless contractually obliged as stipulated in original contract...
I wonder how many of these required payouts were because of contracts arranged under labour!?

This really doesn't have anything to do with socialism.

Redundancy payments need only be one weeks wages for every year served...
If being paid more then the question of 'why?' Is valid.
And then the question of 'who allowed this?' is also of interest...
