White Liver Transplant Patient Claims He Is Turning Black

A transplant patient, Semen Gendler (yes, that’s his real name) claims he is “turning black” following a liver transplant after being diagnosed with hepatitis C and cancer.

38-year-old Gendler, from Krasnodar, Russia, was given a liver transplant by an African-American donor, and shortly afterwards colleagues began noticing his skin ‘changing color’.
His colleague Igor Atamanenko said: ‘I noticed that his skin was getting darker. When he told me they had given him the liver of an African-American man, I guess that was probably the reason for the colour change.

‘I have known my friend for years and he has always been if anything extremely pale, and now for the first time ever he is becoming dark skinned.’

Mr Gendler denied that the skin colour change could’ve simply come from a suntan.

He said: ‘I could end up much darker than this to be honest, I don’t care. The main thing is that the liver works and I am healthy. It’s incredible, I am now so full of energy and living between two cities in New York and Krasnodar and if my skin ends up dark who cares, I certainly don’t.’

He said that he had never been somebody to go out in the sun much and had always avoided it even after the transplant which meant he didn’t believe a suntan was the reason for the change in colour of his skin.

mmmmm....this is one of those things to which I would give a qualified "ummmm...I suppose its just possible"
Especially if the donor was a very close match.

well, if as those who do, consider race per se to exist....and having a liver transplant (could I suppose be ANY transplant) can indeed make you "change race" that leaves em with a bit of a problem to argue about doesnt it.

Because then they would have to show that having a transplant can change something fundamental about a person,

i.e. that having a transplant can PHYSICALLY change you from one person to another in all aspects

I know that the liver can repair itself and also, is it right, that it can actually 'regrow'?

Always been known the liver can regenerate itself, It's the only organ that can. Lecture I went to, liver specialist admitted that there is a lot about the liver that specialists don't know. They can operate on it, but they don't know why it regenerates and they don't know why, given the same amount of alcohol intake, one person will get liver disease and one person won't.

Perhaps it changes the amount of melanin you produce?

My dad had secondary cancer of the liver (primary in the oesophagus which hadn't ever bothered him!)

I always wondered why they didn't operate in his liver as that seemed to be a better course of action than coating it in chemo-cocktail.

Healthy liver can have two thirds removed and grow back to normal size within a few weeks.


Even a damaged one can regenerate if given the chance.


THe article is about new stem cell treatment.


Plus, I remembrances reading a year or so ago that if liver dialysis is used, taking all strain off severely damaged liver then will recover and no need for transplant.

I eat liver because the white blood cells push out the red ones, so I can get anaemic, so have very green greens and liver, as you say, not peoples!

I love greens! Unfortunately, everyone in my noise hates green beans so I hardly buy them.

I see your point. I think race has been so manifest in our lives that it's hard to now realize that it's only a fiction. I mean, we've noted racial differences, and injected African and Asians into our lives as servants and such (hence, the habit of looking down on them), that the idea of race seems to be an actual phenomenon.

It isn't, and one thing that proves that, is eye color...I mean, we don't make out a whole race on blue eyes. Same with length of ears, or hair color. Race is significant because we make a choice to define people in those terms. It's no more real than god, or the Easter bunny or Santa.

What is real is the derivative of those fictions: Spring, Christmas time, and Racism. These are actions that we take--rituals, and such--and by that action, bring them to life.

It would be almost comical--a cruel joke--if some of these folks ended up with a liver that made them black. But it wouldn't be the liver, same as it isn't skin color. I would be us that made them such. I think that's the poetic part of poetic justice...like, if it happened to the racist person.

But it rarely happens to the right person. Just like there's never a cab or a cop around when you need 'em.
