In this game of titans, life and death is in your hands. See battle commence on the site of London’s only Roman amphitheatre in heart of the City of London, hear the crowd roar and steel clash as you choose which warriors walk free. In this live action summer spectacular, the Museum of London takes you back to Roman Londinium with an epic re-enactment of London’s gladiatorial games. Performers take to the stage for battle, an Emperor presides and the crowd picks its side. Westeros has nothing on Londinium.

About Gladiator Games

Step into Londinium with pre-show entertainment in the Guildhall Yard from an hour before each show with drinks and snacks available to purchase from the bar. The Gladiator Games takes place in the Guildhall Yard, off Gresham Street. Nearest tubes and rail stations are St Pauls, Bank and Moorgate. Founded by the Romans, the City of London is the capital’s oldest quarter and the only place where you can see Roman remains. One such site is the Roman amphitheatre where, 2,000 years ago, over 7,000 people would have gathered to watch wild animal fights, public executions and gladiatorial combats. At the time, that accounts for almost a third of the population of Londinium.

There are a few reasons why someone would have become a gladiator. It might be a criminal sentence – where they would have to fight as a gladiator for three years. If they survived they were set free! It might be for money, as those with poor prospects could make a living from fighting as a gladiator, or it could have been an attraction to the exciting lifestyle.

London’s Roman amphitheatre was lost for centuries until the original walls were discovered by archaeologists in 1988, when digging in the area before the Guildhall Art Gallery was built. In the arena you would have had an oval of sand surrounded by tiers of seats, just like you would get in a modern sports stadium. You can now wander through these ancient remains and imagine the bloody events that once provided entertainment for the public, as they have been preserved in the basement of the gallery. In the beautiful courtyard above, a line traces the shape of the former amphitheatre. It’s in this yard that the Gladiator Games take place, directly above the original Roman amphitheatre, bringing the history of the City of London to life in the very place that its population would have gathered over 2,000 years ago.
