I find the best way is to go with it and do something until you feel sleepy again. My sleep pattern has been ridiculous for nearly 5 years. I have got to the point I take very little notice of day and night sometimes, I just sleep when I feel tired. I never go to bed early, because I'm then awake at 3 like you, tend to try about 1, have a few hours, get up and write, read, do puzzles or sometimes even cook, then try again. If I have a lot going on I keep going all day but then get overtired and can't sleep at all! My other half goes out to work very early, about 5.30 in the morning and I'm often going back to bed then and if I'm lucky, sleep until about 9.30. The more you stress about it, the worse it feels, so I tend to just think, I'm awake, what shall I do and think of it as normal.

Re: The good night and good morning thread
I've never had insomnia but when my thyroid was severely overactive, I'd get in bed and my heart would be pounding so much it was like I'd run a marathon!
Which, of course, made falling sleep impossible.
Someone said to try making yourself as cold as possible then covering yourself up; the very act of your body warming up can make you sleepy.
Or laying in the dark with your eyes wide open - this naturally makes eyes tired as they strain to see.
Or as sassy says, get up and read or do something to tire yourself out.

Er ... your whining pasty-arsed self - unless you're not one of the 80% that Ben was referring to of course.

Just hate it when I am about to drift and there is a creak to alert me to wake up, had a few of these the night before last, then for some odd reason another high pitched sound buzzed through my ears just as I was about to really drop off. Had a good sleep last night, just bliss.
