A former Iowa State University scientist who altered blood samples to make it appear he had achieved a breakthrough toward a potential vaccine against HIV was sentenced on Wednesday to more than 4 ½ years in prison for making false statements in research reports.
Dong-Pyou Han, 58, also must pay $7.2 million to a federal government agency that funded the research. He entered a plea agreement in February admitting guilt to two counts of making false statements.
Government prosecutors said Han's misconduct dates to 2008 when he worked at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland under professor Michael Cho, who was leading a team testing an experimental HIV vaccine on rabbits.

Not good. It's very important that all drug or vaccine research is above reproach and is done properly. His colleagues presumably believed what he told them, so they will feel disillusioned too.
I hope no rabbits were harmed to any great extent.

really stupid, if they have been checking his incorrect research and even adding to it time, money and effort have been needlessly wasted...

Also, think about all the people who must have gotten false hopes up over this!

very true... what was the guy thinking, he must have known he couldn't have got away with it for long surely....

You know, this case actually illustrates perfectly what I and others have said here about science and how it works.
Han conducted his research beginning in 2008, and by 2013, another team working out of Harvard had proved him a liar.
If scientists weren't competing and trying to either confirm or debunk one another's findings, who knows? But this is how science really works. One scientist or team makes a breakthrough claim and other teams do the work to see if the claim is true or not.

I actually agree Ben and it does work in most facets of science, where the process is observable, repeatable.... there are parts of science when this is not possible then the problems arise...
all that said I am pleased the fraud was found before any serious harm befell someone...

Anything that isn't observable and repeatable is by definition unscientific. Neither you nor I would have been able to tell Han was committing fraud -- the Harvard researchers have training we don't have, though, and they found him out.
Physicists, mathematicians -- any branch of science you can name -- do work that is recognizable to their peers. Their peers have the qualifications to evaluate one another's work even if we don't.
Just to put it into perspective, every single year thousands of PhDs in physics are awarded in the U.S. alone. So every year there are thousands of people earning the qualification to evaluate the claims made by any other physicist.
