David Cameron says Israel was right to defend itself over Gaza attacks last year

Israel was right to defend itself in the face of "indiscriminate" attacks in Gaza last summer, David Cameron has said. The Prime Minister insisted it was "important to speak out" about standing by Israel and said there was an "important difference" between Israel's use of weapons to defend itself and Hamas' use of them "to defend its weapons". "As PM, putting yourself in the shoes of the Israeli people, who want peace but have to put up with these indiscriminate attacks - that reinforces to me the importance of standing by Israel and Israel’s right to defend itself.

“I feel very strongly that this equivalence that sometimes people try to draw when these attacks take place is so completely wrong and unfair.

“Obviously we regret the loss of life wherever it takes place, but I do think there’s an important difference – as Prime Minister Netanyahu put it: Israel uses its weapons to defend its people and Hamas uses its people to defend its weapons."

Spot on by the PM.

Unusual 'liberal' message from a tory minister.  But I agree.

I believe most of the west has greatly misapprehended the lines of division in the Middle East.  The extremists are conservative, hailing from their long-distant and past roots of religion and customs.  Just because they come with guns and violence does not mean they are not to be interpreted as modern, LW revolutionaries.  

We in America made this mistake in 1823, when we interpreted South America as being liberal, and our 'brothers' in their resistance to the Old World.  Over the centuries, how many of those governments have become havens for tyrannical generals and dictators?

Israel had a right to protect itself, indeed.  Simply put: Gaza = Hamas = Iran = a theocracy that lives by a doctrine started in 630 AD.  Who wants to call that modern or left-wing?  The lesson to be learned is to not always judge the outside world according to our own ethnocentric charts.
