totally agree ,my best friends brother in-law and my friend, live`s in Nepal with his son and wife, He is a Sherpa we where very worried when we heard the news all day we have been phoning the embassy with little news but we did hear via an American source he an his son are ok His wife was actually over hear in the uk at the time but cant get back as the airports in Nepal are closed
so far we know his house is still standing but his next-door neighbours has completely collapsed and he and his family are among the missing

my thoughts are with them

Seriously sad to hear about this. Nepal is a beautuful country and the people are the best- Kathmandu is one my favourite cities, feel so bad for the people of that city.

ON latest reports on evening news here, they say that over 3,000 are feared dead (where early reports here yesterday were firstly over a hundred, than a couple of hundred..).

WHILE the epicentre was 80 kms outside of Kathmandu, the quake went beyond Kathmand and shook Everest and flattened much of Base camp.. With 17 climbers feared dead as of a couple of hours ago.

WITH the main trekking and climbing season being March->May, this quake has hit at the peak of Nepal's tourist season. Meaning that :
* BOTH More Nepalese workers and foreigners were in that area at this time;
* NEPAL'S economy will take a severe whack from this disaster ~ affecting not only this year's tourism trade, but probably for the next 2 or 3 years ?

This is terrible. Britain is sending 8 search and rescue specialists. I think they may need more than that and also aid and quick.

it is not about 'helping people in need' it is about helping our companies gain a fiscal advantage

All western nations pretty much do the same (and so does China and Japan)

ON TONIGHT'S News (Wed., AEST) :

Death Toll has reached 5,000 !
(Inc. a few dozen each in Tibetan and Chinese border areas..].

19 climbers on everest confirmed dead on Everest, with several more climbers and trekkers missing..

WITH the number of missing, plus those belie buried under rubble who aren't recovered yet, and those remote communities that haven't been reached yet, the UN has said that the death toll may indeed double over the next week !

OVER 8 MILLION people in all have been affected in those regions covered by the 'quake - whether through the deaths, injuries, homelessness, loss of power and other infrastructure, and destruction of busineesss, and therefore livelihoods..

ALL exacerbated by the national lack of emergency services, and the 3rd world medical services ~ plus the fact that there is no follow-up welfare services to help with disaster rekief and recovery...
HENCE the need for international and charitable aid to continue over a long term..

Crying or Very sad

AND FOR THOSE who might complain that international aid isn't fast enough getting 'onto the ground', I will make the following points :

* Help has to wait on the affected country asking for it, so that they know where and how that help should be delivered ~ and with poor police and military responses, it does take longer than it should;

* WHEN our countries offer their $5 million or $10 million up front, THAT is only their initial grants, and more often starts following over following weeks and months as the need becomes clearer;

* THERE were already 10 Search-and-Rescue teams in there a couple of days ago ~ so any extra teams on their way from Britain, USA, Canada, Japan, NZ and Oz, may be kept waiting for a few days yet, before being allocated to various areas...

* THOSE initial cash aid grants are separate from any medical supplies, military peronnel, S&R teams, and equipment that flows in to help in rescues and recovery; AND the foreign aid that will likely be increased again over the next few years.. Idea
