Watch as David Cameron claims he has created more than 18 MILLION jobs in TV gaffe
David Cameron was guilty of wildly over stating how many jobs his government have created in TV gaffe
David Cameron claimed to have created more than 18million jobs over the last five years today as he spectacularly messed up his figures.
The Prime Minister was trying to boast about the Tory plan for the economy on Sky News when he made the gaffe.
He said his party would "continue at the rate of creating 10,000 jobs a day" over the next five years.
Adding 10,000 jobs a day over five years would be the equivalent of an increase of more than 60% to employment in the UK, which currently stands at around 31 million.
Mr Cameron told Eamonn Holmes: "We've pledged today two million jobs in the next parliament, because we are going to continue at the rate of creating 10,000 jobs a day."
The gaffe came after the Prime Minister tried to defend himself against claims he abused his position to attack Ed Miliband from the steps of Downing Street.
Yesterday, the Tory leader broke with long established convention to criticise the Labour leader directly as he officially started the General Election campaign.
He became the first Prime Minister in ten elections to use his privileged position in front of the famous black door to make such a party political speech.
But within hours of Mr Cameron claiming Labour would hike taxes by £3,000 if Mr Miliband became Prime Minister, Tory Party chairman Grant Shapps was forced to admit the figures were a “guess”.
This morning, Mr Holmes hit back at Mr Cameron after he launched another attack on the Labour leader.
He said: “There you were outside Downing Street and you have a swipe at Ed Miliband, and you’re at it again this morning. A lot of people would say ‘it’s not cricket’. You used the wrong place yesterday.”
Mr Cameron tried to defend himself, and said: “I don’t agree with that. In cricket there are two opposing teams, there’s a choice. It’s the same in politics.
“Now I will defend my record over the past five years and I will talk a lot about that during the campaign.”
Mr Holmes replied: “But you had home advantage. There’s you outside Number 10, and there’s him outside his wee house there.
"And you look all grand and Prime Ministerial and whatever and a lot of people are saying Ed should have a right of reply.
"A lot of people also saying if you want to get personal with him, why didn’t you do it in the head-to-head? Why didn’t you do it in a debate?”
Mr Cameron said: “We’ve done 146 Prime Minister’s Question’s together. I wanted to get on with those debates well before the election campaign for all sorts of reasons the broadcasters didn’t go with that.
“So in the end we had this sort of log jam and I broke that by saying come on then lets have the one big debate that’s going to happen on Thursday.”
Mr Holmes replied that during last week’s Battle for Downing Street show, it looked like veteran interviewer Jeremy Paxman “clubs you like a seal” as the Prime Minister struggled to answer questions on zero hour contracts and food banks.
