Actually when you think about population size and wealth you would expect America to have far more because it has countless more Uni's.
The US has a population 5 times bigger than the UK you have 25 in the top 50 and the UK has 8 which is very impressive for the UK.

Re: Top 100 world universities by reputation – in full
Ranking universities by popularity is inevitably 20-years behind at any given time. Popularity is a trickle-down measurement, that takes at least two generations of college applicants going through the process, before it sinks in. By then, the universities have completely reshuffled and moved on.
The real measures are Nobel Prize recipients, grants and funding, publication record, staff and major achievements. For example, the University of Edinburgh is probably the greatest bio-science school in the world, and it is no coincidence that the Roslin clinic there came up with the first cloning of an animal, known affectionately as Dolly the Sheep. Berkeley, when I was there, was ranked the best academic institution in the world,,,hmmm—but not just because I was there. It still has the most Noble Prizes of any institution in the world, educational or other.
Individual schools count for a lot...for example, the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania, is probably the best MBA degree in the world. The London School of Economics and Political Science is no doubt up there in economics and political economy (geopolitics). Harvard Law and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, would both also be up there in their respective fields. And the list goes on.
The universities that are expert in evaluating universities are the University of Cincinnati and Carnegie Mellon University, both of which specifically research and publish rankings annually. As a former admissions committee member, and former chairman of the graduate admissions standards committee at Rutgers University, I still receive their materials.

Note: Universities that display a blue icon feature an enhanced institutional profile, which can be viewed by clicking the institution's name.
