11-year-old Nashville boy charged with homicide after allegedly shooting friend

ASHVILLE (Reuters) – An 11-year-old Nashville boy faces homicide charges stemming from the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old friend, officials said on Saturday.
The boy told Metro Nashville detectives he was playing with a gun that he had found when the older boy was shot on Thursday, police said.
The shooting on Friday took place on the front porch of the victim’s home, they said.
The victim ran to a neighbor’s house for help and was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died, police said.
The younger boy fled the scene of the shooting but was found and apprehended, police said.
He was slated to appear in Juvenile Court on Monday.
Police said he was charged with homicide after consultation with the District Attorney’s Office.

As it should do. Why are guns so freely available to kids in Amercia?  I understand that it's the "right of the people to keep and bear arms" but where is the respect for what is after all a lethal weapon

As long as you have a right, it will be used only to the lowest common denominator. That's why they have drivers' tests and other qualifications to privileges.

Unfortunately, the Second Amendment is a constitutional right, not a privilege. In the eyes of the Supreme Court that appears to mean there can be no barriers...or at least, minimal barriers. I forget, where are we in this dance?

Also, state laws come into play. As most of you are aware, state governments are in the grips of stupid Republicans nowadays.

Stupid Republicans are, among other things, gun nutz. They see to it that no new restrictions are enacted, or that any reasonable restraints are discarded.

For stupid Republicans, there can be no compromise on such political questions. After all, we have a black, Muslim president and can't trust anyone.

another reason is people don't think it will happen to them because they "know" how to be safe........pfft.

recently near here a man was carrying in the Salvation Army Thrift Store when his holder held on by VELCRO (ffs) came loose, fell to the floor and then then pistol WHICH WAS NOT ON SAFETY, discharged a round!!!!!!! FFS ad nauseum. luckily no one was hurt. He wont be prosecuted because people in the store declined to press charges. If I had been in there damn well sure I would've pressed charges against his criminally stupid self.
