PLO body decides to end security cooperation with Israel

Ramallah (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) - The Palestinian Liberation Organisation's central council decided Thursday to end security cooperation with Israel, in a potentially explosive move after the Jewish state cut off a key source of funds.

The PLO council decided "to stop security cooperation in all its forms with the occupying power" which it urged to "take over full responsibility for the Palestinian people in the occupied State of Palestine, the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza".

Set up under the 1993 Oslo autonomy accords which founded the Palestinian Authority, the coordination involves the sharing of intelligence and is considered crucial for Israel to keep tabs on Hamas and its West Bank members.

The PLO have done this in retaliation for the tax income that Israel is supposed to hand over to the Palestine Authority, but have held on to it illegally because Palestine has had the temerity to put Israel's war crimes before the International Criminal Court.  They thought they could do that we no repercussions.  They were wrong.

I don't think generally that people know how much Israel relies on the PLO for secuirity in the West Bank. Many Palestinians consider them traitors. That they have taken this stance is remarkable, and it will effect Israel greatly.

The PLO have cooperated on these matters for some time I believe and I wonder what is Israel's excuse is for cutting of funds to the PLO who have generally tried to find some accord with Israel towards a 2 state solution.

The withholding of the taxes is inquitous and they thought they had got away with it. Not now they haven't, think they might look back with hindsight and wish they hadn't done it.
