Wired.com takes a pretty thorough look at the first mass-produced information tech designed to be worn on the face.

On the one hand:

“If my buyer came to me and said he just purchased 1000 units that looked like the Google Glass he would be fired,” says Jonathan Muller, CEO of Gaffos.com, a retailer of designer eyewear.

But on the other:

The fact of having one will mark you out as exclusive and special. “Google Glass will say, for a bit — ‘Look, I have $1500 on my face — and privileged early adopter access’,” says Owens. It’s not dissimilar to the signalling of high end watches. “Watches are rarely fashion at all, they’re just a way of saying ‘Look I have £10,000 round my wrist.’”

Right now it looks mainly like a head-mounted camera (the smallest I've ever seen to capture video like the one at the source).

While that's cool, I'm way more interested in its use as a heads-up display for the real world. That's going to take a lot of doing (something like a massive 4G always-on data connection), but maybe by the end of the decade?

Speaking of the video, I *LOVE* the part with the trapeze artists.

Don't we have enough distractions already? This is another gadget that will cause more car wrecks and other accidents. Texting is bad enough. Nobody will be focusing on what they should be focusing on. We are already a society that pays no attention to anything or anyone but their own immediate selfish interests.

You're probably right. I plan to use it like my cell phone -- in that it will usually be in my pocket unless I have a real need to use it. I can't stand those people who always seem to have their phones out, tapping away.
