Former Miss Turkey arrested for ‘criticizing’ President Erdogan
A former Miss Turkey got a firm dressing down for quoting a satirical poem online that criticized President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Merve Buyuksarac, 26, a model and 2006 pageant queen, was arrested after she posted a quote from a poem in humor magazine Uykusuz, Central European News reported.
Her arrest comes as Turkish officials are cracking down on critical media in the wake of the terror attacks at the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine in Paris.
Cops last week stopped a Turkish newspaper’s delivery trucks to make sure they were not carrying copies of Charlie Hebdo that might be offensive to Muslims. Turkey is secular but almost 100 percent of its population is registered Muslim.

So much for free speech in Turkey. Looks like people who live there need to tread very carefully about what they say on-line.

agreed......and that INCLUDES the right to bear arms.....subject of course to the necessary and quite correct "qualifier" that you MUST be a "suitable person" to excercise that freedom
something with which I have NO problem.....

I support the right to bare arms or bears arms
We are a convict nations so I don't think we ever had that right (actually Pretty sure redcoats were sent to slaughter early Aussies that though they did ) BUT we have always had people in uniforms pointing guns at us... so I guess that makes us safe
Non-clip feed shotguns and manual rifles qualify as tools in rural areas. Hand guns and Semi automatic rifles (with large clips) are the real thing that needs to be restricted.

Shouldn't you also be a 'suitable person' in order to exercise freedom of speech? Or.....

Well, bottom line, I'm with you on freedom of speech. I just want to point out that speech is not all that innocent and pure. What is it they say: The pen is mightier than the sword?
It is a necessary evil. But, along with freedom of speech is the obligation to listen.

Absolutely. But look how often the listening part is ignored, even on the Internet. Or should I say, especially on the Internet.
You would hate Herbert Marcuse's Repressive Tolerance, http://www.marcuse.org/herbert/pubs/60spubs/65repressivetolerance.htm. Yet you have often made his very point: in the end, freedom of speech only protects the established ideas, and does little or nothing for the new or unorthodox ideas. Yet, the ultimate justification for freedom of speech is to maximize the development and exchange of ideas. And here we use it to promote the hackneyed, used ideas.
It's like trying to sell new cars, and everyone is flocking to the used car lot.

ever thought just maybe thats because there ARE NO new/unorthodox ideas (sociologically speaking)
or that those "new/unorthodox" ideas are just plain dumb (for instance becasue adopting then requires not only every country in the world but every PERSON in the world to agree to be bound to them ...and ALL at the same time, universally and without reservation???)

Sooo...you are suggesting that free speech is no longer necessary, because there are no more ideas to exchange?
That reminds me of Charles Holland Duell, US Commissioner of Patents (1898-1901), who famously said in 1899, "Everything that can be invented has been invented." The logical conclusion is that we close down the whole office.

NO...because ther is plenty of debate about the "useage" of ideas and of course opinion is never fixed...

Make up your mind. If there's nothing new to be said, keep quiet. If there is, keep it going.
Don't give me this blah-blah about 'usage' and 'opinion'...if we've heard it, we've heard it! God knows, there's too much babble in the world already.

Re: Former Miss Turkey arrested for ‘criticizing’ President Erdogan
there are new ideas it just adopted slowly over time, unless a critical event forces change.. Generally some people take the leap and try new things if they are successful (or look like they are having fun) others will join them until it reaches critical mass and becomes the new norm.
I think that is why we have different personalities, human society would not actually function if we were all the same, this way it allows our species to take risk with some of our number yet be 'conservative' with some others. greatly reducing our chance of extinction yet letting us continue to advance and multiple adaptations to be attempted at the same time.
