George Brandis gets a surprise, hates it like he hates freedom

Surprisingly, someone let attorney-general George “Bigot” Brandis give a speech at last night’s Human Rights Awards.

Thankfully, Brandis’ speech was interrupted by the presence of a ghost from Australia’s human rights past, David Hicks - one of the Australians illegally imprisoned and tortured in Guantanamo Bay.

“Hey, my name is David Hicks!”, he shouted as Brandis was talking.

“I was tortured for five-and-a-half years in Guantanamo Bay in the full knowledge of your party! What do you have to say?”

Apparently it wasn’t much, as Brandis then walked off the stage, possibly to complain the tortured and illegally-imprisoned Hicks had impinged on the senator’s rights somehow.

Hicks’ told reporters that yesterday’s US report into Bush-era torture proved his claims he had been tortured at the facility.

“There are Australian officials .... who knew the entire time what was happening to me, and what the practices were in Guantanamo, even though they told the Australian public that everything was fine, that I was being treated humanely,” Hicks told the Guardian.

The report “makes it harder for those who deny that torture took place [at Guantanamo Bay]”.
