UN rebukes Israel over Jerusalem settlements

Israel has faced strong criticism at the UN Security Council over plans to build homes in occupied East Jerusalem.

UN political chief Jeffrey Feltman said that the settlements would raise "grave doubts" about Israel's plans for durable peace with Palestinians.

The meeting was called after the Israeli PM's office ordered plans for over 1,000 new units to be advanced.

Jewish settlements and Jerusalem are among the most contentious issues between Israel and the Palestinians.

'Cycle of violence'
Mr Feltman said Israel was "in violation of international law" when moving settlers into Palestinian territories.

The US, Israel's strongest ally, said it was "deeply concerned" at what it called provocative actions by Israel on the issue.

The BBC's Nick Bryant in New York says the US made it clear that the settlements would escalate tensions at a time when the situation was already tense enough.

A spokesman for Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has described the closure of a disputed Jerusalem holy site as a "declaration of war".

The move came amid tension after the shooting of a Jewish activist. Israel's PM called for calm, saying Mr Abbas was responsible for escalating tensions.

Yehuda Glick, a campaigner for greater Jewish prayer rights at the Temple Mount/al-Haram al-Sharif, was wounded.

Israeli police later killed a Palestinian suspected of shooting him.

The man, named as 32-year-old Moataz Hejazi, was shot after opening fire when police surrounded his home.

Rabbi Glick is a well-known US-born campaigner for the right of Jews to pray at the site, which they are currently prohibited from doing. The compound is known to Jews as the Temple Mount, and to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif.

It is the holiest site in Judaism, and also contains the al-Aqsa Mosque - the third holiest site in Islam.

Do you know the best thing that can happen is a massive sink hole swallows the whole site up and then nobody has anything left to claim ownership and fight over anymore.

I still maintain we have plenty of land for them in the Southwest U.S., they just have to deem it holy, then they can all live in peace (?)

A more sensible solution is perhaps the simplest: share the land.

Unfortunately, extremists on both sides will never allow that. Even more unfortunate, these extremists are getting more power in their respective governments.

Even if they could share the land, there would still be those fighting over the temple mount, whee the only sensible solution to that would be to make Jerusalem a free city, not governed or owned by anyone.

Seriously though how many conflicts have been fought over Jerusalem? If ever there was a for a a sink hole to appear, now is the time and took away the Temple mount, with nothing left for people to fight over.
