British people think that there are twice as many immigrants in the country than is really the case – and four times as many Muslims, according to a new survey by Ipsos Mori.

The research, carried out by an online survey of approximately 1,000 people aged 16 to 64, reveals that as a nation we hugely overestimate certain numbers, believing that one in five people in the UK are Muslims (21 per cent) when the actual figure is five per cent (one in twenty). By contrast, we underestimate the number of Christians in Britain – believing that just 39 per cent identify with the religion, when the real figure is 59 per cent.

If it was one poll I would tend to agree with you Eddie, but this is not the first one and look how similar the results are.

Today:

Two polls with similar results Eddie, it speaks for itself.

Probably the people polled lived in built up areas with high proportion of foreigners....

The poll that Didge is quoting the figures from is accurate. The ONS census from 2011 showed that the Muslim population of England and Wales was 4.8%.

In the 2011 Census, Christianity was the largest religion, with 33.2 million people (59.3 per cent of the population). The second largest religious group were Muslims with 2.7 million people (4.8 per cent of the population).

There's a certain type of person who cries "bias" or even "conspiracy" when a scientifically conducted poll reveals things they don't want to believe or hear ...

Just from reading NewsFix, I was under the impression that three out of every five UK residents was a black Muslim immigrant who has committed at least one murder on the street in broad daylight and gone unpunished for it, while the liberalists sang their praises and tried to increase their numbers

Interestingly, the same trend can be seen in the U.S., where people who are unaccustomed to living around Latinos (in states further from Mexico) are usually more vocal against immigration (which here is seen as coming mostly from Latin America, whether that's true or not). States like mine, where Latino people have lived for centuries, are far more comfortable living with them, even if we might be majority conservative on other issues.

THE results of such polls doesn't really surprise me !!! Largely thanks to the likes of News Ltd, the Guardian and the independent rags, and scaremongering groups like BNP and EDL.. I reckon you could get similar results in similar polls over here as well !

YOU people should keep in mind that these kinds of polls are often being done every month or so..

THAT could mean 10-12,000 people over a year or two ~ AND, as long as there's a wide range of regions and demographics those polls can give a fairly accurate result.. AS long as the statisticians actually know their job...

AND don't forget that Tommy is a perfect example of the UKIP/EDL/BNP/"Daily Flail" believers ~ always prepared to believe the worst of that propaganda ~ as long as it fits their warped personal agendas..

No Didge, Londoners have moved out en masse to get away from immigrants.


Leaving a very high percentage of immigrants in London, So if you ask todays 'Londoners' what they think about immigration, no surprise these immigrants say it's a good idea....

There maybe a high percentage of foreign born 36% which means 63% are not and thus a vast majority are fine witrh immigration being as London has had many years of this, so the xenophobes have left have left, leaving the real Londeners.

Thursday 16th May 2013 saw the release of the latest set of 2011 Census data. Over the coming weeks the Census Information Scheme will be producing a series of detailed reports and online tools exploring this new data, but in the meantime here are some headlines for London:
Country of Birth and Passports
 1.36 million Londoners born outside the UK held a British passport (45 per cent of non-UK born Londoners).
 The top 5 passports held by non-UK born residents in London were: UK (1,362,800), Poland (140,000), India (117,300), Ireland (108,600), ‘Other EU country’ (105,600).
 717,500 UK-born Londoners held a passport that is not British Country of Birth and Religion
 51 per cent of UK-born Londoners were Christian, a proportion which falls to 45 per cent for those born outside the UK
 Londoners are twice as like to have no religion if they were born in the UK
 41 per cent of London’s Muslim population were born in the UK along with 31 per cent of Hindus, 66 per
cent of Christians and 78 per cent of Jews.
Country of Birth and Ethnicity
 3.7 million Londoners, who stated their ethnic group was White, were born in the UK (76 per cent).
 548,300 (36 per cent) of Londoners with Asian/Asian British ethnicity were born in the UK.
 A greater proportion of Londoners with Bangladeshi ethnicity were born in the UK than outside.
 545,500 (50 per cent) of Londoners with Black ethnicity were born in the UK.
Religion and Ethnicity
 70 per cent of the capital’s Christian population were of White ethnicity.
 81 per cent of those who stated they had no religion were of White ethnicity.
 96 per cent of Hindus, 73 per cent of Buddhists, 88 per cent of Sikhs and 53 per cent of Muslims state their ethnicity as Asian/Asian British.
 The most ethnically diverse religious group is Muslim with significant populations in all ethnic groups.

Migration
 One in three of all Londoners born outside the UK arrived when they were aged 16-24. Nearly as many arrived aged 25-34 and a quarter were children when they arrived.
 Half of all migrants to the UK living in London in 2011 arrived since 2000.
 The known patterns of migration to the UK for Caribbean-born residents are clear, with significant numbers arriving before 1971, though there was another, smaller influx in the 1990s, whereas the arrival dates of migrants currently in London born in India or Pakistan are more evenly spread, though nearly half of those born in India arrived in the UK since 2000.

Ethnicity and Housing
 The majority of households, in all ethnic groups in London, lived in accommodation that was neither overcrowded nor under-occupied, based on the number of bedrooms.
 Overcrowding was greatest in households whose head had Bangladeshi ethnicity (35.8 per cent did not have enough bedrooms for those living in the household).
 27.0 per cent of African, 25.5 per cent of Pakistani and 20.5 per cent of Gypsy and Irish Traveller households were overcrowded.
 Under-occupation was most prevalent in households headed by a person of White British or White Irish ethnicity (27.7 per cent and 25.7 per cent respectively).
 59.9 per cent of White British, 52.1 per cent of White Irish, 66.3 per cent of Indian and 50.0 per cent of Pakistani households were owner-occupied.
 White British and White Irish households accounted for 54.0 per cent of all households in London but 64.8 per cent of owner occupied households
 The ethnicities with the highest percentage of households in socially rented accommodation are Black Other (52.0 per cent), Mixed White & Black Caribbean (50.0 per cent) and Bangladeshi (48.5 per cent).
 Black Londoners headed 12.7 per cent of all London households but 25.2 per cent of socially rented households.
 49.5 per cent of White Other households (a category which include many European migrants) lived in privately rented accommodation.
 White Other Londoners accounted for 12.8 per cent of all households in the capital but 26.7 per cent of the private rented households.
Religion and Housing
 There were similar numbers of Muslim households in the three main types of housing tenure: socially rented (36.8 per cent), occupied (30.2 per cent) and privately rented (33.0 per cent).
 The overwhelming majority of Sikh and Jewish households were owner occupied (72.0 per cent and 71.6 per cent respectively).
