Man Drives Into Pool As Flip Flops Get Tangled

The car shoots out the elderly man's garage into the swimming pool after his footwear gets caught up in the accelerator.

A man has driven his car into his own swimming pool after getting his flip flops tangled up in the pedals.

The man, believed to be in his 80s, escaped unharmed after his white sedan shot through the back door of his garage and into the pool in Los Angeles.

Police said the man managed to extricate himself from the car before rescue services arrived at the property in the 2700 block of Scripps Place, Altadena.

There was nobody in the pool at the time, officers added.

Captain Jeffrey Sims, of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, told CBS that the man's sandals got caught in the car's pedals and he was unable to brake.

Instead of using his hand to brake he tried untying the knot or some thing!

this is why I drive barefoot mostly......

heels are just as bad......don't even want to think of Ben's sparkly boots!

 

IN AUSTRALIA (and NZ and parts of S.E. Asia..) "flip flops" are called thongs (and what the Yanks label "thongs" are called G-strings..).

IN most, if not all, states down here, it is now illegal to wear thongs and other dangerous footwear while driving ~ and recommended that either you drive in bare feet (my preference, and that of many friends and relo's, during warmer weather..), or that you keep a pair of joggers or sneakers in the car to change into if your feet are too soft.

Cowboy hats vary drastically.  The felt variety are worn in colder climates such as Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.  In the southwest, you can't have felt hats--too hot.  In the southwest you want straw hats.  Ben lives in Texas and look at his.

Straw hats don't last as long as felt ones, and they tend to get cruddy and twisted.

 

 
::=|Q::  STRAW Hats are mostly meant as hot weather/sun hats;and though lasting only a fraction of the life of a good felt hat, one advantage is that they should also only cost a small fraction of those felt hats ~ these days there are also budget models out of Asia made out of paper, shredded and suitably waterproofed...
[I have one broad-brimmed version that I picked up for gardening for only a handful of $$ back in th 90s, that already has a couple of extra holes in it..].

Among the felt hats, decent quality wool winterweight hats are made out of a good quality densely-rolled sheep wool felt, ~ whereas the cheaper ones aren't as heavy, with the felt not rolled as many times, and only last a fraction of the life of th better made items.
[I have an American made wool-felt hat similar to the Indiana Jones model, except for a different headband and lining - and $20 cheaper !].



Lighter and better breathing hats are made from rabbit felt ~ where the cheaper felts used in your $20 work and novelty hats is only rolled 2 or 3 times, typical Stetson quality felt is maybe rolled 10-12 times, and the world's best Akubra felts are rolled more than 20 times, (and still made in Kempsey at the same site where they have been milling it for more than a century or so..).

The best Akubra 'dress' hats can be maybe 50-60% more expensive than the Stetson cowboy hats. American Presidents, Aussie PMs, and British and Danish Royalty all wear Akubra brand hats when out and about in rural areas..
[I have an Akubra 'Silver Spur' model that would cost 4-5 times the price of the cheaper "washable and crushable" work hats - pick up and handle the Akubras (or the top shelf Stetson models, too..), and you will realise instantly why they are more expensive -you can easily feel the difference].



Finally, of course, you can also have proofed leather cowboy hats ~ maybe 3 times the price of cheaper felt hats, but only around 2/3 to half the cost of the best 'top shelf' rabbit felt hats. (The kangaroo leather hats similar to those that could be seen in some scenes in the Crocodile Dundee movie were around $70-80 down here, last time I looked at one..),
(Leather hats will be more waterproof, and hence also warmer and a lot less breathable; and after a few years the leather dressing will have to be re-applied..).

Then there is the pink one you have to wear if going to Blackpool on a hen night

Actually my go-to hat is this Cov-Ver "Indy" model:



... but it can be a bit too warm for a really hot summer day (in excess of 40).

every year it seems someone sensible gets a bill before the state house about banning use of mobile phones while driving then some jerk gets his pantries in a twist and starts screaming about his rights etc.....(although last time I checked the US constitution doesn't mention phones.....) and it gets thrown out. one asshats said "what will the go for next ? I wont be able to drive and drink my double big gulp at the same time?"

I agree totally, Cass.  Here in California they have already banned cell phones and driving.  Big-time $1,000+ fines.

Now the idiots are texting and driving.  Already killed a couple of kids in crosswalks doing that. Who could be so fooking stupid?

Honestly I am a much safer driver in heels that bare foot, it's what I'm used to doing.  Flip flops not so much but I have to admit to having a flip flop fetish   I have a couple of pairs.................

sadly too many. I lose count the number of times I see people on the phone taking corners or speeding or blowing a light or stop sign....and they are more likely to hurt others by their stupidiness than themselves....

it was law in the UK and I just carried on over here - the whole family did plus we told the boys that cars would be gone if we knew they were using phones during driving except in case of emergency. I rarely eat when I drive as well - I'm a good driver just gotta be prepared for the idiots.
